P.S. I'm still a "domain newbie" :)

I've been looking for URL and e-mail redirection for my domain, I don't actually need webspace at the moment, and I can use my ISP anyway if I need to. Someone here was kind enough to suggest mydomain.com, which is completely free. However, they state you need to change your name servers manually, this is new ground for me, so I decided to register a new domain (one I had been meaning to do for a while) and try it out.

I chose NSI, and I used their GUI to register directly, in doing so, I now have a direct account with NSI. The procedure seemed so simple and best of all was under my control, I decided when the name servers changed and I could monitor it. I wondered that when I move my next domain away from the ISP and to mydomain.com if I could consolidate them under the one account.

However, more than 24 hours after I created the domain it still did not appear in the various WHOIS, including those from NSI and mydomain.com. When I changed the name servers the WHOIS entry started to appear but still with the NSI name servers. I was wondering if hosting companies get preferential treatment when changing registration details ?

Nevertheless, I feel more confident having the NSI account under my control as well as the redirection entries in mydomains.com. Am I missing out on something here or is there additional benefits to be gained if I give control of my domain to a hosting company or ISP ?

The other domain I have is still under the control of the ISP, if I asked for it to be moved away, can I get the account details (and password) from them (it is registered to me) and move it myself ?

Hi Ian

Normally it takes 48 - 96 hrs for updates to kick-in. This applies to any new registrations and/or changes in currently registered ones. So I wouldn't start to worry yet. If it doesn't happen in that time-frame, contact your Hoster for help.

As for the Domain Name hosted with your ISP, you own the name and do not need anybodies permission to move it. You would simply go to NSI (who I presume you Registered it with) and update the Domain Name with the new information. ( i.e. IP address for your new Servers and probably Technical Contact info. )

Remember though, if you are paying your ISP to host that Domain Name, you will need to cancel the account. ;)
