How Find a Good Hosting Company.

It’s a real dilemma these days as by spending some amount any hosting company can prevail at all possible location of customer search like google, yahoo, forums, market places etc. thus wherever you go you find few hosting companies haunting you.

The other aspect relates to huge, throw away costs some of the hosting companies offer, thus customer without knowing how much space and bandwidth really he needs gets engaged with these hosting companies.

To find a good hosting company, you can always search in Yahoo, google and msn for a while. May be you need to go to about 2 to3 pages depth.

While searching prefer key words like quality, performance, etc. Also you may like to prefer to mention your location with every key word, if you are keen to find a hosting company in your region (which is always a bonus).

Omit key words like “low cost”, “Cheaper” etc as firstly these are not indication of good web hosting services and secondly the hosting service providers have normally littered the net with these.

When you start analyzing the hosting companies, you can keep following points with you which not only explain what to look for but also how to ascertain its effectiveness:-

*Feature Offered. These could be:-
Space and Bandwidth. First determine how much you need, do not fall prey to big offers just for nothing. Most of these are very simple tricks. Based on years of experience hosting companies know that an average customer does not use more than 100 Mb space and 300 MB bandwidth thus whatever bigger than that is offered is just an offer to attract customers.
Email and Database. The number of emails per account should only effect you as per your needs, do not get over influenced by ‘unlimited” when you know you do not need more than 10 in any case. Use of mysql will be important if you need a data base driven site or contents.
Other Features These could be free scripts for guest boot, chat and web development etc. Most hosting companies do have these in their hosting panels. These make things easier for you if you are to use these. So give a plus to hosting company for that.

What kind of support they are offering ie email only, ticketing system, phone support and a toll free phone. Give an additional point for each service offered. You may need only one of few of these, but eventually it may be important to have a hosting service provider with more kind of mechanisms to be reached to.

Note the response time to your sales requests. Better host respond within 4 hours. Note that the auto responder is not to be rated as response, though that does indicate a bit effort.

Do they have physical office location. It may be a indication of serious business, this also ensures that you do not run into part timer. You can always ascertain it from the contact us page, by calling them, seeing if only a mobile number is given and not a land number etc. Its not that a part timer or the one who cannot afford an office location cannot be good in provision of services, yet generally the one with physical offices may mean a bit more settled ones. This may not be totally true in all cases

Price / Cost. Not always the ones who are cheaper are good and not always ones who are expensive offer high quality services. Better is to stay away from two extremes in cost. Mostly one can think and expect that the ones asking a bit higher prices should be able to afford management of things better.

Popularity A web host might have the best feature offered, unbeatable customer support and reliability in place but without an effective marketing plan, it will go bust too. Let’s face it. If a web hosting provider does not have sufficient members and steady growth of new members, it’s very difficult to survive in this highly competitive industry.
Do not go for the more than 2 to 3 pages in search engines. The hosting company should be effective enough to appear in these pages.
Sponsored listing shows interest of company to promote themselves but not always an indication of good hosting company.
Read reviews and see top 10 list. Though in most cases these are the ones haunting the net with their money and not always quality.

Reliability. Every web hosting service provider will have more than 99% listed on their site. But few have the courage to provide independent prove of their uptime. Ask for it. A hosting company should always have a monitoring service and should be able to provide you a report of the same.

These were some very basic things I could think of, there could be many coming up in subsequent discussion.

Good overview Muneer.

I guess you may add 'Number of Years of existence in Hosting Business' as one of the factors, as that also adds to the credibility of the service provider.

Sure that can be one way. Yet in one of the similar discussion most were of the view that listing that would probably mean the new hosting companies cannot be good which by no standards would be a correct statement to make.

Two more points...

1) I would caution that response times to sales are not always a good indicator. There are many companies who provide very fast support, but ignore sales requests until business hours. This shows that their main focus is where it should be, on taking care of their existing customers.

Support is what really matters. If a company is focused on support, that is good. If their main focus is on sales, however, there is a possibility that once they have your money they will not put as much effort into providing good support, which leads to my next point.

2) Don't EVER sign up with a company that requires you to pay yearly. If you've already been with the company for a long time, and you trust them, then it might be ok to go ahead and pay yearly in order to get a discount. Otherwise, pay monthly. This way, if there is a problem, you are not stuck.

Support response is something which one can only physically experience when one is customer himself, hearing from here and there gets is pretty confusing at times.
A good team does not leave any field loose else they end up loosers.

Hi, everyone, i was wondering what happen with the web hosting review sites? are they trustworthy enough to consider the options they have?

best regards

If you ask me I would say that no single source is adequate. Its pretty simple for wealthy hosts these days to have net work of review sites and have things listed in their favor. One would have to find a reliable review site for what you mentioned. Mostly you will find a net work of hosting companies supporting the review site as well. Yet this is sure one source and to date fairly reliable if one does not land up in the ring of affiliated review sites.

I would say that this is the most comprehensible source I've encountered thus far. There is another site like this one called webhostdir.com, but they, like this site also accept advertising dollars, so you're top spots, have paid to be there. I think webhostingstuff.com is pretty good, but they have paid avertising also, you just have to be able to wade throught the bs and know what questions to ask. Take your time to, there are a ton of people who impluse buy or need a server like yesterday, that in the end didn't like the server they purchased for a multitude of reasons and end up leaving theie host and spreading bad things about them. Either way, you know what you want nad don't be afraid to ask!

The importance of review sites cannot be denied. Yet, whatever we say and wherever we go we would always find about 10 to 15 hosting companies as these are the only one left in the hosting business. So what we are to search for, nothing, go get them and see how it goes?

everity
11-18-2007, 07:41 PM
Only 10 to 15 hosting companies? You mean that advertise everywhere? If you dig a little deeper, you'll find thousands of hosting companies.

I agree that reviews should be taken into consideration, but there is so much more to consider than reviews. Companies change as they grow. These changes often relate to quality. Some get better, some get worse. For this reason, only recent reviews are reliable.

Yes, some time back I posted on how to go about finding a reseller company. some of the points given like support response, physical location also apply for selecting a reseller, Others can be as under, By the way most of the top hosting companies have gone for affiliate hosting and have left out reseller hosting, it seems its not feasible for both, ie the reseller and the ones reselling:-
* Do they offer any restrictions to number of accounts in each package, in some cases you land up in an unending chain of keep upgrading your account without some real gains.

* Do they offer over selling, yes it has a disadvantage when used in the context of over usage of server, yet the way things are frankly new business cannot survive without it.

* Do they offer domain registration reseller services as well. This keeps you compact.

If you ask my personal opinion I would recommend go for managed vps with a good company than going for reseller hosting services.

I gotta agree with Bear on that one, say what now?

Hosting companies should ONLY come into the top ten based on the end user reviews, and not just a 5 second review, but a rather thorough and in depth review, such as

Network:
Support:
Uptime:
Reliability:
Pricing / Packages

The trouble with top 10 is that there are different perspectives for different users. Some people want the top 10 based on price, others on performance, others on support, etc. A truely useful top 10 web site would offer different categories, and avoid a general list, IMHO. Currently, I don't think any such site exists.

From what I hear, many of the "top 10" hosts are simply those that pay to advertise on the "review" sites.

This is great summary.
Just want to add one more comment:
A company is good or not somehow depends on your web hosting requirement. Some good companies for others might not be good for you. So before using above criteria to find the good companies, you will need to sit down and spend sometime to think about what kinds of web hosting solution you will need. If you purchase a shared web hosting solution from very top companies for your enterprise level web site, it will not be good.

supportmatrix

No company want to compromise on any of these criteria. Basically all wants to be on the top. And there might be companies which are not in the top 10 list and who are able to provide better service. I think we should never approach a company based on their name, but if possible give others a try and decide.

First, find a company that is reliable. Search the company name in the net and check if anyone has complained about it in forums, websites or in their blog. Then make sure that the company is well established. Next look for a plan that suits your needs.Try also articles such as creating a blog, html etc. to gain more information before choosing the right web host.

Thanks for comments, when certain theme gets lot of writers, there is hardly any new thing which can be added even though the writer might have written every thing at his own without consulting any thing (still he may end up repeating things which already exist).

Yet I wrote few things based on personal experiences.

According to me , one has to cut out their requirement and then go for a hosting search in accordance to that.

If your a Blogger of sorts, then cheap hosting are fair enough
If your a Website Geek providing service, then i would recommend VPS
If your a proxy owner, then look around for proxy host.

Apart from this, one also has to consider the reputation and uptime of that particular hosting company.

with cheap hosts especially you'll likely rely on the user forums more than official support, so make sure it's active.

While choosing a web hosting company, you need to look whether it is providing proper bandwidth, security measures, multiple domain hosting, and technical support. You should also consider the requirements of your website. Is your website requires dedicated server or shared web hosting is sufficient. If you are looking sore reliable web hosting company then you have no need to waste your time in searching it as IWIHostingcom is a reputed web hosting company that provides all type of web hosting services as per your website requirements.

on my opinion, the most important thing to be considered before you join in a hosting company is getting to know the past experience of their customer

elitehostpro

When choosing a webhost (in no particular order):

1. Customers Service - Free and 24/7
2. Money back guarentee of some kind
3. Space/Bandwidth vs Dollar Amount - I have seen the 5 Gb of space for $9.99 per month and then the next host 5 Mb of space for $15 per month
4. Whats included - features?
5. Google for any customer reviews/complaints

I think it is pretty important to check whether the package is for dedicated servers or not. Another thing that should be kept in mind is to check the bandwidth usage limits.

I never host with any company that has been in business less than two years. I also insist of 24/7 toll free phone support and I'll test that at all hours to be sure it's good.

I think one of the biggest dilemna is the fact that many people buy what they don't need. For example someone who wants to host a personal website goes for an unlimited hosting package when they really don't need it.
