So Windows Server 2008 will be here soon :)

On February 27, 2008, Microsoft will jointly release Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008, kicking off what it calls a "launch wave" with hundreds of events worldwide. Microsoft will pitch the products as a platform for next-generation Web service applications.

Windows Server 2008 is still expected to be released to manufacturing before the end of the year, with November as the rumored timeframe. Microsoft took a similar tack with Windows Vista, making it available to businesses in November before its public launch in late January.

What do you think this means to hosts offering windows servers?
Will they start offering Server2008 in november as the rumor goes, or only in February when it'll be officially launched?

What about swsoft and virtuozzo. What timeframe do you think they'll need to adapt server 2008 for their virtualization.

Host are already offering 2008 rc0, I have seen Maximumasp.com and CrystalTech with dedicated offerings and also I believe CrystalTech is offering a beta on 2008 and IIS7.

Being released is nice and all but for webhosting, my feeling is that it'd be extremely premature to implement Longhorn prior to SP1 (at least wait 3-6 months for the cd to cool off). Having 2008 when it's first released makes for a great bragging point ("we're the first!"), but Microsoft has historically bit the big one when they first release an OS (from a security and stability standpoint anyway). They always need at least one service patch before things start to settle down. Windows Vista is a classic example. Or even Windows 98 (which then became 98se). I wouldn't touch a host that ran everything off a beta version of Windows. No offense for those who are trying to do so - I'm not a host so what do I know. :)

Discountasp.net is another host that is offering beta hosting for IIS 7.0/windows 2008. Also they do beta hosting for .NET 3.5 which Microsoft will officially launch early next year.

I myself can't wait to use ASP.NET 3.5 in a production environment.

Windows 2008 is the same architecture as Vista. Pretty much the same back end coding but with a different name and with more apps with no limits as Vista has. I would think that the OS itself should be pretty stable including IIS7 as well.

I'm pretty sure Vista and 2008 have different code base than 2003 and XP. 99% sure. That's the reason why Vista took so long to come out, they originally started to just use the code base of 2003/XP but decided to ditch that idea and start anew. 2008 is based of Vista code base and architecture, which is different from 2003/XP. Almost positive. I'll research again but i'm pretty sure from what i've read. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Vista is not based off 2003. It's completely different.

As for Server 2008 not being 'secure' at launch, keep it mind there is currently an SP1 being beta tested for vista. I believe the release of SP1 for vista will happen a bit before the release of Server 2008. So when Server 2008 is released, it will already have SP1 built in.

Have you guys played with the trace feature in IIS7? I got a copy of 2008 RC0 from the Microsoft 2008 roadshow, going to install it locally and continue to play around with it this weekend.

Yes, The new windows 2008 OS can run in command line only without the GUI (explorer) loaded.

it is called headless mode in the beta installer I used :)

To be honest, I'd wait a year before using any new OS for a server, you never know what major security issues may pop up.
