View Full Version : Change of name?
ShoresPC 10-21-2007, 03:00 AM When I started this business I was doing computer repair locally and I got my name, ShoresPC, from that. Now that I am doing just hosting and design work I am second guessing my name, should it change? I think it is kind of unprofessional even to have a hosting company under a domain name containing PC.
Am I over-analyzing or should I change the name?
CArmstrong 10-21-2007, 03:06 AM If you've already built up a brand around that name, why change? It would be detrimental to do so, I think. Trying to sell hosting under a different name to your clients would probably confuse them and turn them off.
Last but not least, your name is catchy. Just stick with what you are. :)
Bannaz 10-21-2007, 04:05 AM Like CArmstrong has already said, if you've already built up a brand around that name, you will be simply starting over just to change your name. If your field changes again you won't want to have to alter the name.
My advice would be to stick with your name. An established brand is so important. :)
Aussie Bob 10-21-2007, 04:39 AM . . . I think it is kind of unprofessional even to have a hosting company under a domain name containing PC.
Greg from JaguarPC.com would disgree with that. :D
I don't think it's an issue.
You could always start another company under a diffrent name and just run the two of the same equipment. Its been done before.
mrzippy 10-21-2007, 05:15 AM How much time/effort/money have you invested in your existing brand? If it's a lot, then you may want to just leave it alone.
If you don't have many customers, or are willing to "start over" with a new brand... then you could change.
However, it is my opinion that you can make a successful brand with ANY name. It does not have to be "catchy".
Your brand name is what you advertise and promote. Do you think "google" spent a lot of time thinking of something catchy"? Or "asmallorange" or any of the successful companies that have a rather odd name?
Also, in the hosting market there are thousands of names like "somethingHOST" already. Perhaps your current name is a good way to differentiate from all the others. I kind of like ShoresPC. It's short and simple and easy to remember.
What you may want to do is register a few variations:
shorepc
shorepchosting
shoreshosting
shorehost
etc...
(This is to protect yourself from people who might want to play on your brand, once you become popular. Also to catch anyone who mistypes or doesn't remember quite right.)
AeonCube 10-21-2007, 05:30 AM As said above your name is fine to use, and if you already have many clients that know and trust that name then best to leave it as it is.
The idea about setting up another company name for hosting is a good idea but that can take some time to build. Try getting another domain name for hosting and market that on the web.
Hope all works out for you :)
ShoresPC 10-21-2007, 12:24 PM Thanks for the input, I tend to over analyze things some times. I hadn't thought of JaguarPC either, that is a good one :).
mrzippy, I think I will do something like that.
The second seperate company is another interesting idea. Stuff to think about, I'll continue on as is for now though, thanks.
I think that you should just be yourself.
What this means is that if you are unhappy with the name and want a cool one, then you should change.
I think that since you started thinking about this in the first place, you are not completely happy with your name.
I should say though that most people don't care if you have a cool name or not, they want low prices, stability, features and a good reputation.
You could name yourself asdfhost.com and if you got a good reputation people would think it was a cool name.
BUT, if you fundamentally don't think this name is for you, then first take into account how well known you are, how hard it would be to get new customers compared to with the shorespc name, and if the equation goes in your favor change your name.
I also want to add that there's nothing wrong with your current name.
It's short and easy to remember, that's almost most important.
It's not really you know, ultracool high tech stuff, but it works very well.
bdwarr6 10-22-2007, 01:39 PM A name is a name its a name because it has meaning in it.
u2mike.com or whatever it was did custom direct admin hosting back a few years ago was a huge hit with a really odd name, its the quality and marketing you do not the name
What you do is take your name turn it into an LLC like nick rose incorporated then run everything you do as an entity from that business.
JaguarPC is really Jaguar Technologies but JaguarPC is a subsidy of the LLC
Jay August 10-22-2007, 01:45 PM Consider this:
"Where are you hosted?"
- "ShoresPC"
"Is that 'shores' as in the shore?"
- "yes".
And EVERYBODY will type your domain correct.
As CArmstrong says, you've got a very catchy, easy to pronounce and easy to remember domain. Very precious!
Atarim 10-22-2007, 10:41 PM As Nick mentioned, it's fine to use "[insert new name of your hosting operation], a division of ShoresPC". That way you maintain continuity with your existing business (and its legal setup) while still being free to choose a new name for your new line.
Racksurfer 10-23-2007, 01:38 AM Personally, I believe that a change in company name could signal a variety of benchmarks. If your future business would meet those needs of new products.
Evaluate your companies future core business. View your brand from a clients prospective.
I don't see why you want to change from ShoresPC to something different. You have a great name already.
makaze 10-23-2007, 09:03 PM I think it's a short catchy name. I'd keep it :)

Thanks guys. Hey I like it too, I just like to think things over a lot :).
