View Full Version : phpwebhosting?
mangeli 08-01-2002, 09:17 AM I've been with phpwebhosting for almost 3 years now, and I just started having problems last Friday with their service.
I'm wondering if anyone else on their servers is experiencing any problems at the moment or if it is just me.
Thanks,
Mark
mangeli 08-01-2002, 09:29 AM On that note, does anyone know anything about hostnv?
http://www.hostnv.com
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 09:52 AM Don't know anything about hostnv.
Are you thinking of leaving phpwebhosting?
I was with them for a while too. I was a very happy customer till a few months ago when my database connections started failing and the uptime was getting worse and worse.
There are a lot of companies comparable in price who can offer similar packages with better control panels...
<<Admin edit: let's forget that sneaky advertising in future, shall we?>>

Yes. I am.
My site started having problems last thursday, they still aren't resolved.
It seems the only way I can get their tech support to look at my tickets are if I send them to the sales force as well.
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:07 AM I was just curious if he was looking at leaving because of recent problems. Just seemed odd that he has had good service for 3 years and one problem he MAY want to bail. I say "may" because I don't know, but with your reply MCP it sounds like there my be a bigger storm brewing that what is on the surface.
I don't know if I had great service for 3 years and there was a few problems, I would give them a little time before I bolted.
Unless you are shopping for a better deal, the problems may push you quicker at moving.
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:09 AM Any problems that we may be able to help/suggest how to fix?
Don't get me wrong you have every right to leave them, esp. if they are not responding to you.

Well, the trouble ticket has been open since friday morning 7/25 and it only has two responses from their tech support people. Neither one says that they're working to correct the problems.
I like phpwebhosting, and for the most part, I haven't had an problems with them. I'd like to stay where I am, simply because it would be easier.
However, it is hard to operate a site when the server isn't acting correctly...
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:12 AM Have you voice your concern, "Hey don't get this fixed in X amount of time I'm leaving"
Sometimes that gets alarms going and they push you to the front. Esp if it is effecting a lot of customers, they may really be tied up. Dunno as I don't know the exact situation.
I would have to say though if this is a one time thing in 3 years time that is pretty good.

Take a look at the site:
http://www.tinyminds.org
Click on the link to the image gallery or click on the screenshot that comes up in the random shot box.
Now go to http://blarg.nebecannezzar.org (a temp site I have set up on a different connection) and click on the screenshot image.
It seems as though the original site is having problems conntecting to the mysql db, or actually finishing the php. This just started last week, the site had been running fine since april.
I have since gone through and cleaned out the server of all the old stuff (I had parts of the site from two years ago on it) and cleaned out almost 80m of stuff. I thought that might help, but it hasn't.
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:24 AM Its a PHP driven site.
I went to tinyminds.org and see what you are saying, hummm.
I then clicked on "Galleries" and clicked "backgrounds" and got this error.
Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in /home/mangeli/www/modules/My_eGallery/includes/megMOD.php on line 330

mangeli 08-01-2002, 10:28 AM hmmmm.... yea, I know about the memory problem, the guys at phpwebhosting said it might be a cap on the ammount of memory a script is allowed to use (I gave them the error message that did come up) but other than that, they haven't said anything.
They did upgrade to php 4.2.2 right before this happened...... so it could be the magic quotes thing as well....
unfortunately, I have no way of testing this myself....
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:39 AM I would ask the host about the magic quotes. When they upgraded their PHP it may have wiped the php.ini settings.
I wish I could help more. I wish you luck.
mangeli 08-01-2002, 10:41 AM Yea, I added it to the ticket. Who knows if they'll look at it.
ljprevo 08-01-2002, 10:53 AM I added a ticket there to help push them for you, I want to see how quick their response is.
I have recommended customers there because of "special php programming issues" that I can NOT offer.
Hope it helps get your issue resolved.
phpwebhosting.com 08-01-2002, 12:27 PM Hi,
[I'm posting a public reply since this is a public issue now and I want to make sure everyone knows that we are working on the clients issue]
It's Greg from phpwebhosting.com - first I'm very sorry if you feel like we have not given your issue prompt attention. I will make sure that you are updated on the status of the issue.
The problem is with the memory usage of your script. We have limits in place for all scripts to prevent any single script from causing a problem for the whole server if the script crashes, etc.
We are working now to find out why your script is suddenly hitting these boundries (the php upgrade should not have caused a problem - according to php.net the 4.2.2 release was only a quick bugfix for 4.2.x and had no code changes - also our php.ini is still intact).
The reason that we have not been able to give you a quick resolution is that we cannot set the limits higher for your account without first testing everything out on a development box to make sure that the changes don't also effect other users on the same server.
Please understand that we are working very hard to get your scripts back up but all changes must be done in a managed fashion.
Please know that your issues are VERY important to us - I will make sure that the tech working on it communicates with you more often on the issue!
Also, (for everyone else) I wanted to also clarify that this is an issue with a particular clients scripts and account. It is not a connectivity issue or stablity issue. :)
Best Regards,
Greg
mangeli 08-01-2002, 01:33 PM Gregg,
The only reason I posted on here was because I was not getting answers in the cp.
The only thing I heard from you was "We will look in to it."
Its been a week. There was no definate response as to the cause, a simple, "Yes, all of a sudden the exact same script that you have been running all along is now hitting the size limit" would have been fine.
Thanks,
mark
