please arrange the ones in terms of performance and your suggestion. I mean if I have to select among these, at what priority do i arrange them in ?

: athlon
: amd
: celeron
: pentium

I think the right sequence is

#1. Pentium
#2. Athlon
#3. Celeron
#4. AMD /duron ?

If on base of MHz:

Athlon XP
Pentium IV
Duron
Celeron

(e.g. Athlon XP 1800+ is only running at 1.53Ghz)

But the Athlon 1800+ and up are difficult to cool down...
So irritating noise of fan's will let you buy those good old stable silent PIV's

Celeron should be last, I believe.

I have done several bench mark tests, on the athlon vs p4. So from my expirience, here would be my selection.

Athlon (Either core) XP
Pentium 4 (Norwood Core)
AMD T-Bird
Pentium 3
Duron
Celeron

I agree with your list.
And the xp aren't always noisy. Depends on the fan you purchase. I boguth a really nice fan, silent. The bets way to cool one of those are heatsink, thermal gel, fan.

May I ask what fan you bought that was not so loud yet has enough cooling - power to cool the AMD XP Processor?

I am an AMD person but for a small confined space like a laptop I would go with the Intel....
