I am thinking about building a server (personal use, not for the company) and I was curious as to the best cases and hardware to use. Just the hardware specs. if anyone has any ideals, suggestions, comments, etc. it would greatly be appreciated. :)
The system would be used with Linux RH btw.
Thanks in advance.

Hope this is the right forum ;)

It comes down to how much money you are willing to spend, but for personal use anything is overkill :).

Specs. What is the normal specs for a server running RH.
There's no standard in specs.
You can see that at http://www.gngsta.com/names.
The way it works most of the time is, you buy what you can afford, and install something on it.

I personally like dualie servers especially for RH on SMP.
But then again, I suppose the main question you would ask is what are you going to do with that server?
What would be its main purpose?
If it is just going to site at home, you dont really need some super nice case. Just a case with enough fan slots will do fine.
I personally like cases with at least 3 fan slots...

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I should ask it this way:
What would the specs. need to be if I was going to sell it to a hosting company (which I am not, but that is the type of server I am wanting to build). :)

i have built many servers in the past, but i am currently, for personal using, using a server i built a few years ago which is not powerfull at all
500Mhz AMD K2 3DNow
256 MB Ram
its running redhat 7.3
with mysql, sendmail, apache, php
it has never crashed, never gone sluggish, it is usually accessed pretty fast
test it for yourself

It loaded pretty fast considering I am on a 56k :)
What type of network card(s) usually come standard with servers?
Thanks again.

ok and now im going to tell you that that is running a kde gui as well, not bad for a 500Mhz machine
servers usually come with 10/100 cards dont they?
anyone gunna back me up on that
i would think it very unusual for one to come with a 10MBit card
a server that i use for work, which is a windows server, came with a 1 GigaBit card
but that was a very expensive server

p3 800 Mhz
256 Mb SDRAM
20 Gb ide 5400 rpm harddisk
2u server case
For personal use, for a webhosting company I would use powerful hardware (also depends on the purpose of the system).
