View Full Version : Pick My Video Card.
viGeek 08-01-2002, 01:25 AM I just realized, my one computer, with a 2MB memory video card is entirely played out. I cant even play games such as quake 1. However I want to get a high quality video card, yet, there are so many. I have narrowed it down to several selections. Please vote! Whoops forgot the poll. Here is the selection.
ATI Radeon 7500 - 64MB DDR Memory - $55
GeForce2 GTS 64MB SDRAM - $54
GeForce2 MX400 64MB SDRAM - $39
Kyro II 64MB SDRAM - $35
GeForce4 MX 420 64MB SDRAM - $65
GeForce2 TI 64MB DDR - $60
Right now I am aiming for the ATI Radeon, because it is an ATI card. All the other are generic cards, with the gefore etc technology.
IGobyTerry 08-01-2002, 01:27 AM GeForce2 TI 64MB DDR - $60. The MX Series cards aren't very good, and I think DDR is better than SD ram so that's why I picked this card .
iamdave 08-01-2002, 01:30 AM Ya a poll would've been nice!:stickout
viGeek 08-01-2002, 01:32 AM Yes, I forgot the poll. However, I didnt know how to edit it to incorporate a poll. Therefore I encorporated a 1997 style poll :)
iamdave 08-01-2002, 01:35 AM I'd go for: GeForce2 TI 64MB DDR
zdwebhosting 08-01-2002, 02:05 AM Geforce 2 Ti 64meg DDR
i hope to get a g4TI from newegg.com soon :)
Chris 24Host 08-01-2002, 02:10 AM My vote goes for the GeForce2 TI 64MB DDR
mas3000 08-01-2002, 02:19 AM What are you guys talking about?
From that list choose:
GeForce4 MX 420 64MB SDRAM - $65
That one is definately your best bet!
zdwebhosting 08-01-2002, 02:22 AM well i know i had a g2 pro 64meg ddr not even a g2 TI and i got a new g4mx in my new pc and i can notice a pretty big difference but that was'nt a TI g2
so it would probably be close to the same :)
viGeek 08-01-2002, 02:32 AM I take it that everyone seems to like the GeForce 2 TI... The only reason im leaning towards the ATI radeon. Is because the $60 model of the GeForce 2 TI, is a generic/house brand board. Does anyone have anything good to say about the radeon 7500?
IGobyTerry 08-01-2002, 02:44 AM GeForce4 MX 420 64MB SDRAM - $65
Nah, it get's outperformed by the GeForce 2 in almost every test it's put up against. Any MX series of card is a very stripped down model making it slower than the others. The ATI Radeon is a good card too though. It's really personal preference. All those VC'c are very close in how they perform. And it's almost 3 in the morning and I have to work tomorrow so I'm going to bed.
mas3000 08-01-2002, 03:31 AM I think the Geforce4 MX 420 beat the all the geforce 2 models in benchamark tests.
DjPaj 08-01-2002, 12:38 PM But but but, why do you not include the elite? The GeForce4 Ti4600????? Yeah it may be a little pricey, but it is def. worth it. Now me, I'm going for the big boy, the nvidia Quadro4 900 XGL.... like $1,000.00 Hehe, look out 3d design here I come.

Out of the cards listed, I would take the Radeon 7500.
I've got sweet onboard video! I can do 1024x768 without and problem, and Quake 2 looks great! :)
Oh, but really, I'd go with inogenius.

LOL
I bought this card last summer for $200 CAD man :(
Global-Host2 08-01-2002, 03:19 PM People don't like the mx series because most don't have new features like pixel shadding, however soem do. I myself got the geforce 4 mx 440 (i believe) dual processors and dual output. Very nice.
MoSupaFly 08-01-2002, 06:12 PM a little bit of advise... ATI == bad drivers
Hopefully that'll all change when their 9700 cards come out (which as said earlier will blow away the the GeForce4 TI 4600).
But since you're looking for a low cost solution (and it kinda sounds like your computer doesn't have the latest CPU) then I'd suggest the GeForce2 TI that you have listed. Or the GeForce 4MX card. Hmm... yeah either one.
Mester 08-02-2002, 01:17 AM I would go for the ATI myself, but its really just a personal preferance. I'm buying a Radeon8500 128mb DDR next time i'm in Toronto for $180 CAD. All my video cards are ATI :D
zdwebhosting 08-02-2002, 01:24 AM i like geforce better :)
we all have our opinions lol
Get-Hosted.com 08-02-2002, 05:20 AM The GF4 MX will outperform the GF2.
The Radeon card is decent, with semi-decent drivers now that it is old.
What generic brand is the GF2?
Almost all the cards you listed are getting outdated... but still great for the price.
Phrozen: I hope it can crush the GF4... it's about a full generation ahead of it.

The generic ones are OK in my opinion as long you choose one with decent fans. But every video card comparison should include at least some benchmark.
Here is the result of unreal tournament 2003 under 1280x1024 (dm-asbestos) done by anandtech:
ATI Radeon 7500 - 64MB DDR Memory - 52 fps
GeForce2 GTS 64MB SDRAM - about 30+ fps
GeForce2 MX400 64MB SDRAM - about 18 fps
Kyro II 64MB SDRAM - 30 fps
GeForce4 MX 420 64MB SDRAM - about 32-34 fps
GeForce2 TI 64MB DDR - about 35-40 fps
