PH-Kev 10-16-2007, 07:10 PM Hello all,
Free domains from register.com, i think its only .com's but nice all the same!
http://www.register.com/promo/acquisitions_8772090537.rcmx?trkID=SEMJ78Vw4W (http://www.register.com/promo/acquisitions_8772090537.rcmx?trkID=SEMJ78Vw4W)
Nice find. Thanks.
EDIT:
They allow other TLD's besides .com.
n3tw0rk5 10-16-2007, 07:49 PM Re registered an old domain i used to have for the hell of it.
Nice find :)
Isn't register.com the one that went bankrupt and had to gave all there domains to godaddy. I would never trust the company.
HostThree 10-16-2007, 08:33 PM w00t new domain :D
P-nut 10-16-2007, 09:27 PM Isn't register.com the one that went bankrupt and had to gave all there domains to godaddy. I would never trust the company.
No, that was registerfly.com
Orien 10-16-2007, 09:35 PM Nice find! Thanks for sharing. :)
Thanks for letting us know. :)
indiaberry 10-16-2007, 09:58 PM Are they going to keep the domain name once the one year is up or are we allow to transfer the domain name? It looks like if I register the domain name for free with them for a year, next year I will have to pay $35 or something about that amount to have the domain name for another year.
PH-Kev 10-16-2007, 10:52 PM its no obligation so i guess you can transfer it after 6 weeks :)
Aussie Bob 10-16-2007, 11:01 PM I'd watch the fine print there folks. I bet they have some conditions there. :uhh:
LoganNZ 10-16-2007, 11:06 PM Very nice :)
Purchased new domain - serversecuritynz.com - still redirecting to there moronic redirection page. Just awaiting DNS propogation.
Thanks for the great find :)
ATLDedicated 10-16-2007, 11:29 PM I would be careful getting any domains you really want from this offer. I contact them and they could not give me a decent answer about transferring the domain or who owned it.
Just a word of caution.
Sago-MikeK 10-17-2007, 08:33 AM Even if it was a domain you wanted to keep.. $35 a year for registration? Jeebus.

Yes, May be a trap set up. I would better pay $7 for a good service, instead looking into free or offers like this.:D :D :D
~ServerPoint~ 10-17-2007, 09:05 AM Free domains it is good always. But first of all everyone should understand profit of the company (just a liitle bit). ;)
Aorozco 10-17-2007, 10:36 AM if u not check, can pay 9 USD for the private ..
Anywyay i can transfer away in two or three months, no ?
steventay 10-17-2007, 10:42 AM no more free
PH-Kev 10-17-2007, 10:48 AM I checked again and its still free.
Although some people may have a point, for such a large company, they dont even have any terms written up for this...
I never really thought about it at first but you'd probably want to register the-domain-you-always-wanted-for-fun and not
your-next-big-investment-domain ... just incase :)
steventay 10-17-2007, 10:53 AM is it only free for US?
i input and it say $35 for first year..
Techno 10-17-2007, 01:00 PM is it only free for US?
i input and it say $35 for first year..
If you follow the link in the first post you should get the free domain offer at checkout. It does ask for a credit card number so remember to transfer out 6-8 weeks before expiry.
Toeki 10-17-2007, 01:44 PM looks like you need to enter a credit card to get that free domain
zarkef 10-17-2007, 02:54 PM I made one new domain too :D. Watch the cart. It will charge you if you dont pay any attention. Be sure to remove unwanted services that register.com offers and only leave the free domain service. Dont know if i can transfair it. Will see in the future. Keep this post open for future use!
zarkef 10-18-2007, 04:16 AM Changed the names servers of my new domain about 12 hours ago, and still nothing. It usually takes for me 2-3 hours to change from my registar....
Bannaz 10-18-2007, 02:15 PM Sounds like a bit of a marketing campaign as opposed to a trap folks. :)
zarkef 10-18-2007, 04:42 PM Till now everything is working perfect. I also changed the nameservers. The only thing i still dont know is what happens with domain transfair. Will i be able to transfair it? The panel in register.com doenst seem to have any restrictions.
liasion 10-19-2007, 09:29 AM Yes...when i tried to register...it set me an order value of $ 19.99 that includes Free Domain + webspace + website builder Tools...Its pathetic....
boonchuan 10-19-2007, 09:32 AM Anyone try to transfer their domains out? Any issues with that?
PH-Kev 10-19-2007, 09:47 AM Wont know until ater 60 days have passed but i'll be transferring it out.
There is one slight problem i see, you need to call them for the auth code, that seems to be pretty standard with all register.com domains though but im in the UK and it would be quite costly but ill skype them :P
boonchuan 10-19-2007, 09:49 AM I guess I will skip that freebie :( Too troublesome to call.
zarkef 10-19-2007, 10:17 AM Cant just they email you the code? Why do we have to call em?
Well I got one.. It's nice.
Renewal is pricey but..
indiaberry 10-19-2007, 02:55 PM I didn't sign up for a free domain name. No point in doing that. A free domain name is nice but what's the catch?
their .com renewal price is $35
indiaberry 10-19-2007, 04:14 PM Did you lock the domain name to prevent it from transferring?
Yes but I was unable to unlock it just now with no problems.
Trust me it's just like any other domain except its free.
indiaberry 10-19-2007, 04:41 PM Wont know until ater 60 days have passed but i'll be transferring it out.
You have to have an excuse to transfer out that soon. Do you have an excuse that you would feel comfortable telling register without feeling guilty for taking accepting their present of a free domain name? Why do you want to transfer away without giving them a try?
You have to give the register.com a try before transferring out.
What the....its over already? Just like that? ughh...
I was planning to register whtisdabest.com :gthumb:.....seriously.
zarkef 10-19-2007, 05:25 PM Its not over. http://www.register.com/promo/acquisitions_8772090537.rcmx?trkID=SEMJ78Vw4W
The renewal price is indeed very High! 35$  .Its like buing 3 domains from another registar. So here's the trap you were looking for. :) .I hope we will be able to transfer it 1 month before it expires
indiaberry 10-19-2007, 05:38 PM Yes but you will have to have a valid excuse to transfer the domain name out. Is your domain name locked or are you all keeping it unlocked?
zarkef 10-19-2007, 06:33 PM Domain is locked but i can unlock it. i tried it. I only need authorisation code
ldstryfe 10-20-2007, 01:01 AM woo hoo I just got two at one time
Julian345 10-21-2007, 03:53 AM It does say this on the page
quote
For a limited time, you can register a new domain name for your small business
and get it FREE for the first year with no further obligation (a $35 value).
unquote
So if you are concerned take a screenshot of the page or save the page or whatever as proof that it is free with no strings attached.
As I see it, if they charge $35 normally per domain, the profit they are making is just huge .... becuase the free offer is for limited time (with no time given) I would assume they have worked out how much money they can afford to "lose" on this offer, and once they have given away those many domains they will close the offer. Quite a few people will not transfer their domains away and will get sucked into paying the renewal in a years time. I wonder how many newbies will not even be aware that they can trasnfer domains to another registrar, but they will be attracted to the FREE offer initially.
also, when you do transfer the domain to another registrar dont you have to pay a years registration anyway?? So you are only saving 60 days worth of the cost of buying a domain, which to me is hardly worth the hassle. Unless you wait until the year is nearly up then transfer away having saved around $7 or less for the year registration.

Right Hosting 10-22-2007, 10:42 AM I wouldn't bother, I used this company back in the late 90's and they were difficult to deal with, lost several domains with them. Ask your self is it really worth saving $7-8 for 15 minutes plus a lot of worry then another probably 30 minutes later to unlock it, transfer it, take out credit card etc etc... pay $7-8 and register some where you are comfortable with and can sleep at night. If it's free then there i will be some catch later down the line. but if you are really on a very tight budget then good luck!
Would you care to explain how they are difficult to deal with, and why you lost several domains with them?
There are some high profile domains on register.com, and I had the impression they were stable and nice.
dbarretoivo 10-22-2007, 12:29 PM Just registered my domain with them.
I've screenshoted their page to avoid any problem.
indiaberry 10-22-2007, 10:32 PM I printed their page in 'CutePDF writer' to avoid problem, too. CutePDF create PDF file. Also, I made screen shot of the website. Since I brought a private ID with them for a year, I will wait until about 9 months to transfer my domain name if all doesn't go well. If all go well with them and there is a coupon so I can get my domain name for another year less than $10, then I will consider staying with them.
sanver 10-22-2007, 11:19 PM Yes, May be a trap set up. I would better pay $7 for a good service, instead looking into free or offers like this.:D :D :D
Right said Biju. We purchased around a dozen domains for our clients from Yahoo (@ $2/domain/year) and then transferred to our regular Domain Registration (http://www.domains.sanverhosting.co.uk)control reseller account. Everything went fine and all were happy.
Then we found that even after domains has been transferred out our Yahoo, our card was being charged for the renewals. On asking, Yahoo said better make a telephone call to resolve the issue.
It has been 3-4 international calls from Mumbai and still the issue is pending.

Well it is hard to remember all the details now as I think this was back in the late 90's when the domain industry was still going through a lot of growing issues and there was only a handful of registers and Register.com been one of them. I wouldn't doubt them been trustworthy as you are right, lot's of companies and non domainers use them for business registrations but I would not rely on their support and I would be very wary of the fine print and terms. They may have changed now but I do remember that they were damn slow with suppport, I had a number of issues with the domains I owned and in the end these were lost and I can't remember why but I think it was something to do with slow support and getting my domains renewed before they expired. But this was common back then, you had to even write a smail mail to renew your domains I think back in the 90's.:D

this is exactly the sort of things that happens, you have to decide if saving a few dollars is worth all the hassle.
triXtyle 10-23-2007, 06:14 AM Register.com`s support *censored* , mates :disagree:. They response slow, they are not adequate enough, and they are a lil` bit rude ............... think about it......
cheers
PH-Kev 10-23-2007, 07:17 AM first place i ever registered a domain, it was still $35 in the 90's and yes loads of things had to be done by snail mail.
Never used them again after i found godaddy, just registered a domain for the hell of it but its not an important one. I hope they stick to their "no obligation" claim and if not we can post here and hopefully offset them some sales, so its not all bad :P
Edison2 10-24-2007, 01:51 AM I would be careful getting any domains you really want from this offer. I contact them and they could not give me a decent answer about transferring the domain or who owned it.
Just a word of caution.
Thanks for the alarm, I'll be sending them some question and hoping for decent answer.
CameronH 10-24-2007, 02:52 AM Hey! You copied my post of FWS :P
Anyways, I got a domain and transferred it to godaddy yesterday with no problems, So It's safe :)
indiaberry 10-25-2007, 01:30 AM ^Are you serious? You actually did that without waiting 60 days?
why not just have registered at godaddy to begin with since godaddy charges for transferring?

Aorozco 11-17-2007, 10:16 AM Only update, Not working more now.
steventay 11-17-2007, 10:38 AM why not just have registered at godaddy to begin with since godaddy charges for transferring?
he very rich so ok...
craider 11-17-2007, 01:06 PM Only update, Not working more now.
Nope, it still works. You just have to remove the URL argument so your URL would be all before the question mark (i.e. register.com...8772090537.rcmx).
theprimedreamer 03-11-2008, 12:43 PM Hey Guys, this deal/offer is still good and can be found at this site: http://www.register.com/promo/acquisitions_lp_1.rcmx and http://www.register.com/tv and I'm wondering how you folks who took this offer up are doing. Have you had any problems? Were you able to transfer the name easily after 60 days? Any hiccups?
QU4RTZ 03-16-2008, 03:58 PM I know about the offer for some time but as any other free promotional offers, no matter what the provider is, I do not agree to hand-over any billing information such as credit card, PayPal or others as long as the first year, month or whatever for how long it might be free at the beginign. Just be carefull when you do stuffs like this. As we all know, there are good stories and bad experiences too. Goodluck.
Adam Za7 03-17-2008, 06:37 AM Awesome, thanks for sharing this.
