View Full Version : Moving out from Godaddy, who is the best replacement?

A few years ago, I choosed Godaddy as my main registrar, the main reason is their claim on cheapest price in the industry.

After a while, even though I found their price is not the cheapeast anymore, I am not leaving them, because I thought they are concerned about their customers and trying to keep the price lower than most.

Until recently, I found that I was wrong.

Verisign increases the wholesale price of .com domain names from $6.00 to $6.42, which is $0.42 of increase in fee.

Godaddy does not absorb any amount of price increase, but pass on another $0.62 on the full amount to customers.

I am disappointed in Godaddy and looking for replacement, where should I go?

where should I go?

Wherever both your mind and your heart tell you to.

If price is your biggest concern for choosing one, I hope you won't learn the hard way why choosing that criteria can be a big mistake.

Anyway, look at Dynadot, Moniker, Namecheap, etc. And no, there's no so-called "best replacement".

You also have a choice in http://www.answerable.com if you have few domains, if you have lot of them and keep on registering then go for a reseller account with http://www.resellerclub.com

Do you mean choosing a cheap registrar is a bad idea?

I have never been encounter any problems with my little amount domain names on Godaddy. I have only 10++ domain names and maybe this is why.

Can you give me any suggestion on choosing a registrar?

Enom.com are good enough. Also have a look at their sucessful resellers like NameCheap.com.
I suggest you pay more attantion on customer service, because it is most important service.

Can you tell me what kind of customer service we should need? I do not need any for years I manage the domain names.

Hello Kenny,

We use namecheap.com since 2003 without any issues. Today I had some questions and they reply within minutes. Their old price was $8.88 and since yesterday they charge $9.29 for .com/net/org domains.

I can't tell you what kind of customer service you should need. Only you can truly decide for yourself on that.

What I can tell you, though, is what kind of customer service you can consider: the one that'll help you resolve mission-critical issues even if they're not fixed "immediately".

You sound like you're looking for some kind of "formulaic" answer. If it's that easy, I'd tell everyone in a heartbeat.

Remember later that almost all registrar will need to increase their prices to keep up with Verisign costs.

Paying the extra $0.62 will be worth every penny, if you end up transferring your domain(s) to a lousy registrar.

It depends on how important the domain is and where you stay, a registrar who is good for others may not be good for you.

Hehe, I would love to see you posting here again when your new cheap registrar blows.

Not that I support godaddy, but if you are happy with them and price is your only concern, I suggest you stay put.

I was gonna recommend eNom but....if you're not happy with godaddy's pricing, I doubt eNom will be much of an improvement.

I'm a bit of a fan of Namecheap www.namecheap.com - their prices are a little higher than what you have been paying, but overall I have been happy with any support problems I've needed, and they have a great control panel. :)

I switched from Godaddy to namecheap quite a while back as Godaddy had my IP's stuck in a loop that would not update.

Things have been smooth sailing with namecheap up until recently when I found my account had been locked. I followed the support instructions, they emailed me back and asked me to provide a contact number and time to call which I did.

That was yesterday, my account is still locked and they didn't phone. So I just contacted their support team by ticket to find out what's going. As of this posting matter remains unresolved.

Just my 2 cents.....

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm preparing to respond to your PM, but just wanted to publicly apologize for this and let you know your account is now unlocked. Your account was hit by a fraud check, and reviewing it now, it shouldn't have been - I've also passed note on to our CTO to check on the fraud checks and ensure this doesn't happen again.

My apologies, if you need anything further let me know!

Since namecheap unlocked my account all is well. The tech from namecheap also actually phoned me to let me know the account was fixed. So since my last post everything is smooth sailing again at namecheap :)

Chris

Wow. I'm starting to really regret registering a name with name.com. namecheap sounds like a great place to go. Maybe I'll try them with my next purchase. How does namecheap compare with mydomain?

I use Mydomain now and have never had any problems, I still have some at Godaddy and a few at places like Namecheap & moniker ... it is much easier for managing a large portfolio to find a register with good bulk managment tools, support and prices and keep most there.
