Which one would you get? I am going to purchase a new system, and I'm confused on which one to get, I know Rambus costs more, but what are the advantages/disadavantages?

DDR is usually pc2100,2700 JTY 07-31-2002, 11:16 PM DDR has lower latency than RAMBUS. RAMBUS has a narrow data bus that runs at high speed, whereas DDR has a wide data bus running a lower speed. In which case, for many applications DDR is better than RAMBUS. iamdave 07-31-2002, 11:39 PM But why is RAMBUS more expensive? iamdave 07-31-2002, 11:40 PM It's going to cost me about $300 more than the DDR system to buy the RAMBUS system, so I'd like to know if it is worth it... S2 Web Design 08-01-2002, 12:13 AM I would get whatever your motherboard supports, of course. If you haven't picked out a motherboard yet, then that decision will depend on what you plan to do with this new machine. I'm not an expert on RAM, but I have heard that Rambus memory is good for gaming and not so good for a server environment where data streams are short and regular. The reasoning behind this is because of the high latency in rambus memory, as JTY mentioned. So, it's similiar to the decision between a scsi drive and ide drive in that it depends on what environment you will be using it in. JTY 08-01-2002, 12:15 AM Put it this way. You won't notice the difference, except in a benchmark. The Prohacker 08-01-2002, 12:24 AM Originally posted by JTY Put it this way. You won't notice the difference, except in a benchmark. And your wallet :D iamdave 08-01-2002, 12:30 AM Well I am basically going to use it for Web Design/Programming and may be run a Win2K Home Server off of it. I haven't yet purchased the system, I am trying to obtain enough feedback before I make the purchase. The DDR system, like I said is $300 more, which I would rather spend on other things... WoodShedd 08-01-2002, 12:36 AM The DDR system is more, or the Rambus? there is some kind of conflicting info in your previous posts... Rambus is good for graphics applications (video encoding, cad, 3d stuff gaming photoshop.) I think DDR would do you just fine. |
