View Full Version : Buying Websites

I am thinking about expanding DCW over the next few months by adding tangentially related sites -- similar to Hosting Weather Report. I thought rather than building new sites from scratch I would try to purchase existing sites. Does anyone have any tips on where to purchase websites. I checked out http://www.websitebroker.com/ but most of the sites on there were fairly useless :).

I'd love some feedback.

BETA version? That doesn't sound good. It could corrupt my soul files.

Why don't you just email the webmaster of the sites you are interested in and cut out any middleman?

I received an email from a "broker" a few months back saying someone had made an offer of $300 for one of my sites. Because it would have been real easy for someone interested to just email me directly, I ignored it.

Are you new to WHT?
Getting off topic is part and parcel of forum living.
You have to live with it.;)

Yeah, and speaking of parcels, a friend of mine is a driver for UPS and I was just visiting him and his wife the other day while I happened to be in Indianapolis to work with a client there. I lived there for a while a few years ago, so it's always nice to have a chance to go back -- especially when it's a legitimate business trip so it's all deductible! Anyway, I guess it's an ok city, but I couldn't wait to get back to New York. The worst thing there is that the restaurants really aren't that good. At least there are a lot of different kinds, so you can get indian food, or thai, or even afghan, besides of course the more common "ethnic" selections. And some of those are pretty good, really -- it's those that serve the more typical "American" fare that all seem to be mediocre... and most disappointing are the really expensive places, where you'd expect great food. Well, maybe I've gotten spoiled by NYC dining. I do have to admit that some things are a lot cheaper out there: I bought a can of soda from a vending machine on the sidewalk in front of a newsstand down the street from my client's office, and when I put a dollar into the machine it gave back 40 cents! I can't remember when I last got a can of soda for 60 cents in New York. Most people, by the way, call it "pop" or "coke" in Indiana; not "soda."

Anyway, back on topic: does anyone else deliver parcels for a living, or know someone who does?

Because someone looking to sell their site is more in need of money than someone who is not. Let's say I have $1,000 to spend for a web site. If I go to a web site that I think is worth $1,000 and offer the webnmaster that. They will probably want to jack up the price...or be less inclined to sell for a price I can afford.

On the other hand, a webmaster who has decided to sell a site has more incentive to let it go at a lower price :D. I want to deal with desperate people ;).

I see your point but, I though you were wanting to target specific established sites in your area of interest. Sometimes people don't know they want to sell something until they have an offer on the table. Offer below what you are willing to pay and let them make a counter-offer. Then you will have an idea of what they are willing to take.

Worst they could do is say no.

One place to look is bizbuysell.com -- occasionally there are websites among the listings there.

I looked over the site, but it appears to only have domains for sale, I am looking for developed sites. Thanks!

What are you really looking for? Fully functional websites or domain names?
