View Full Version : Registrar That Won't Sell/Use Searched Domain Info

Many times in the past I have used both GoDaddy and NameCheap to search for domain names to see if a domain name I was interested in was available. It seems that whenever I use this, and I am searching for a legitimate name, it suddenly gets registered the next day. The sites never have content, but are always just sponsored results (an example would be http://nitrofile.com).
This has convinced me that most registrars are selling (or using for themselves) what domains people search to come up with domain ideas, and register them. I was wondering if there was a registrar that doesn't do this, as I am sick of domains I am considering buying being gone a day after I search them.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure domainsite.com/name.com do not do this. So you can try them. :agree:

Or alternatively you could use:

who.is for your domain name whois lookups ;)

Running 'whois' command from your own Linux box should be the safest way of checking domain availability. I always lookup domains this way before purchasing after a similar incident with Godaddy.

Mind elaborating why?

Domain tasting companies are always picking up domains all the time, sometimes a domain is registered minutes after I have checked availability, a day is a very long time. If I find a good domain, I register it immediately.

You mean you never even considered registering any of them on the spot? How come?

I once blogged that Namecheap's CEO declared they don't sell your searches or what not. DomainTools' blog also indicated Namecheap's current registrar partner eNom doesn't either.

Ever heard the saying, "you snooze..."

I've used these services for well over a year, and I can tell you that they don't do that. Plus, any domains I've typed in, and I've not purchased, yet I've purchased a couple days later, haven't been registered by them or anyone else.
