Is that right?
The more RAM you have in your server the more network resources you use?

JTY 07-31-2002, 05:15 PM What do you mean by "network resources"? SpiralHost 07-31-2002, 05:19 PM I'm not too sure! Thats what my dedicated provider just told me  the-admiral 07-31-2002, 05:22 PM there is no direct corelation between the amount of RAM that you have and the amount of network resources that you use. Assuming that by network resources they mean bandwidth. SpiralHost 07-31-2002, 05:26 PM I was asking if they had any plans to offer extra RAM for a one-off charge rather than monthly and their reply was: No, we have no intentions of offering a one time fee. The reason why is when there is more memory you are using more network resources. Thanks for the replies :) DanielP 07-31-2002, 05:45 PM Let me translate that for you "Were being cheap and will not sell ram at a one time price. The reason we do this is because the more ram that is put in your server allows your server to push more bandwidth and thus use up more of the bandwidth that we give you" I.e. a server with 256mb ram would probabbly kill its-self when serving 1mbps of dynamic pages, but up that ram to 1gb and it gives it a greater potential to push more bandwidth. So their just trying to tack on that extra monthly fee to make up for their losses for selling servers so cheap i'd asume. SpiralHost 07-31-2002, 05:51 PM This is what I thought but I wanted to make sure ;) infinite 07-31-2002, 06:18 PM Originally posted by SpiralHost Is that right? "Network resources" is BS because there's no correlation between the two in the first place and even if there was, you're *paying* for bandwidth anyway and that'd just mean -- hey -- more money. JBIZ718 07-31-2002, 08:12 PM Overall I would disagree with you Daniel. Ram increases make a server handle more of a load and overall increase the ability for a box to handle more. With this increase overall increases other costs indirectly associated with that machine. There is nothing wrong with looking at costs from a top down approach and realizing those fees and charging correctly for them. Companies that do not realize there costs will not be in business. On top of that there is nothing wrong with charging a monthly fee for that upgrade to offset other costs associated. People can have different business models, I personally like the monlthly fee, but thats me |
