View Full Version : Novice: Confusion of domains
davetay 10-07-2007, 10:15 AM Hey people,
I've had a very basic website for years with studentwebhosting.co.uk (I live in the UK) and gave up on them last year due to very poor bandwidth, support and constant crashing. Now i've decided after some time to attempt to start my personal website again and I looked around finally deciding on webhostingbuzz. This is where it gets confusing (for me anyway). I chose studentswimmer.co.uk (my original old website) and it said it was free/available so I carried on the process and registered on a 24month contract. I've managed to get access to the cpanel and have uploaded successful but the problem is is that studentswimmer.co.uk is actually still registered with studentwebhosting.
It says on whois that I renewed the domain earlier last year till 2008 (just before the problems started) and when I go to studentswimmer(dot)co(dot)uk it forwards to a "account suspended" page! Studentwebhosting have never responded to my emails in ages my account is not working due to my superscription running out. As you can tell i'm abit of a novice when it comes to understanding website domains/transferring etc. Can anyone help me? Why did the domain name come up if studentwebhosting still "own it(?)" and can I get it back with webhostingbuzz even if it seems impossible to contact studentwebhosting?
long and confusing post...I apologize if i'm in the wrong forum aswell! Help appreciated,
Dave
Mysteerie 10-07-2007, 03:08 PM You will need to contact student webhosting.co.uk and tell them that you need an EPP transfer code (depending on the extension). Afterwhich you will need to contact webhostingbuzz and tell them you have this code and wish to transfer the domain to them as a registrar.
Though I would recommand keeping your domain and registrar seperate.
Once the domain is transferred to the place you want, you will update the name servers to point to webhostingbuzz and your domain should work.
colbyt 10-07-2007, 07:47 PM If your last name is Taylor you are the registered owner of record. I am going to try and PM you the whois info. Since you are new, if that fails maybe you cam PM me with email address.
The advice above is the best way to proceed. Though I also agree that it is best to keep your registeration and hosting in different places.
Edit: Can't PM you.

We do not take domain transfers at this time and as John said it is usually recommended to keep your registrar and host separate. I would recommend to transfer the domain name to namecheap.com and then purchase the desired reseller hosting plan from webhostingbuzz. Thanks.
Darth AkSarBen 10-08-2007, 07:36 AM I bought nearly all my domain names from iPowerWeb (dot) com and for 6.50 for the year it is cheap and easy enough to register the domain name. Their registrar is tucows, which allows easy access to the domain management page where you can change contact ifo, email info, nameserver pointing, and enable/disable the lock on the domain (nice feature!).
I am hosted elsewhere, but my domains are registered with a separate company. Interestingly, when I spoke with iPowerWeb about cancelling a domain name for automatic renewal, the guy told me it is common practice to have domains hosted on one company's site and registered on another. Some of their customers host there, but have registered elsewhere, where many have registered there, and host their website at a different webhost.
davetay 10-10-2007, 07:37 AM Thanks for all the replys!
However I tried to buy/transfer the domain from namecheap.com but after the transaction they say I need the EPP code, which i can't get! Studentwebhosting won't respond and now I'm left with paying $70 for a 2 year webhosting plan under studentswimmer.co.uk that i can't use and wasting $17 on trying to transfer the domain i own from studentwebhosting. I'm totally confused and i'm sorry if i'm being stupid but can anybody tell me what i've done wrong and if there's anyway to sort it all out so I can have a website!?
Thanks, Dave
davetay 10-18-2007, 08:50 AM Okay, I phoned enom and they said I need to try and contact studentwebhosting again but ask for my domain to be retagged instead of a EPP code? I presume this is a UK/EU system and they said normally the retag is just the new host in capitals (i.e NAMECHEAP). Will this work or do I have to get a EPP code off them? It says under my transfer details on namecheap that..
Domain Transfers - EPP Requirements:
If you are transferring domains into Namecheap that require EPP (ex: com, net, org, biz, info, us, mobi, cn) you will need to provide us with the EPP code for those domains. Please obtain the EPP code from your current registrar. Once you have the code, go to the transfer status page and click on the domain you are transferring into Namecheap and enter the EPP code (Link will not be present if that domain doesn't requrire EPP). You will also be notified by Namecheap via email if EPP is required. Please note that the transfer can proceed only after EPP code is provided to us.
Not mention of retagging or the name? Any advice?
thanks, Dave

iHubNet-Matt 10-18-2007, 09:20 AM Isn`t there any live support?
Couldn't see one on the website.
viratshah 10-18-2007, 09:25 AM Well,
try calling them up
or get their address from the whois and if the registrar lives close to you...DROP IN AT THEIR OFFICE:D:D:D
triXtyle 10-18-2007, 09:39 AM haha and take a couple of robust guys with you :P
anyway I suggest the admin to make a topic in which users can complain. So the future users to have in mind who to choose :)
cheers
davetay 10-18-2007, 09:41 AM Thanks guys,
Randomly and finally I just got a reply from studentwebhosting! Amazing lol. But it's still leaving me a bit confused. They are asking me for a IPS tag to transfer the domain to the new host. Now a IPS tag is similar to a EPP code i discovered but for .uk domains. But from a earlier post WebHostingBuzz don't take domain transfers so I need a IPS tag for namecheap.com so then i can purchase a reseller package from webhostingbuzz. I can't find this tag for namecheap though i'm guessing its just in capitals. I purchased a silver package already for $70 so will i get a refund?
Dave
triXtyle 10-18-2007, 09:44 AM Ask webhostingbuzz for any moneyback, or for pause-ing the account, so you can get your IPS tag (EPP code) and transfer your domain. If they refuse to do it, tell us, I still support the idea in my previous post.......... :)
cheers and good luck
