Greetings.
I'm a simple guy with simple tastes & simple needs.
[You can see my web site for an example - thrown together one afternoon in FrontPage 2000 and then hand-tweaked.]
But, I'd like to venture a bit further into the 21st century, and was wondering what (ideally) free or inexpensive tools might be out there to help me, as well as where some quality HowTo's & FAQs might reside.
I shouldn't have too much difficulty with user unfriendliness or a bit of complexity -- once upon a time I was a software developer. Then again, I've always found style sheets baffling.
So it goes ... .
Thanks kindly,
- Richard

Frontpage has been replaced with Expression Web (http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=Expression%20Web&meta=) you could check that out!
My first choice would be Nvu nvudev.com it's comparable to FrontPage and Dreamweaver, but it's free and you should definetly give it a try.
There is also Amaya which is a more simplistic editor but still has lots of useful features.

You should be able to upgrade to Expression Web for less than $100. You can also download a free trial (http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/download.aspx?key=web) for 60 days to see if you like it. It creates cleaner HTML / XHTML than Frontpage ever did

There are free versions available as well. Expression web works great, it's clean and fast, with great features, but still its not my cup of tea. Dreamweaver 8 all the way!

same as the other thread.. downloaded seems ok...
I also use expression web, works the best for my builds. Just don't use the templates... lol well, actually, the new css templates in expression web are ok... just change the colors.

For free http://www.nvu.com is the one you would like, I am not sure how good it is.

For a long time I used Nvu and Gimp off my thumb drive due to restrictions at work *Lame US Government computers* and when I don't have dreamweaver I swear by Kompozer actually (The unofficial bug fix of Nvu)

Thus far, I've downloaded Expression Web, nVu & Alleycat.
They all seem to work, and work well.
Expression Web is really slick in that it's got dual windows - you can work in the HTML, and see highlighted in the WYSIWYG screen where you are. Going forward, it's likely what I'll use, tho' it *is* heavy (if you know what I mean). At $99 for a FrontPage upgrade, I think it's worth the money.
For freeware, nVu is really slick.
But thus far (and surprisingly, to me), the AlleyCat editor, with its built-in coloured highlighting and spacing, has been the most help in letting me see and clean up the excess code that Word & FrontPage allowed/generated. Lean & mean, and just an F11 away from a browser view. It's a really excellent HTML editor.
I'll likely check out CoffeCup too.
Thanks all.
