XMB doesn't handle lots of members and posts very well - it also kills mysqld. I have a very large xmb forum running and it makes load hit 5.0-7.0, some times MUCH more. It runs very slow when only 25-30 people are browsing - I really don't recommend it, but that's just me ;).

InvisionBoard recently received the highest rating among free forum softwares with 5 stars and an Editor's choice award in .NET, one of the most popular internet magazines in the United Kingdom.

phpbb also received 5 stars, but not a recommendation.

Well people have posted links to forum software, but nobody has pointed you to excellent forum software like you asked :p

You didn't mention if you wanted free or pay software, so if you want excellent software and want to pay, go to www.infopop.com and look at UBB.Threads. If you want free crap, yeah look at some of the other suggestions so far.

phpbb also received 5 stars, but not a recommendation. I honestly wouldn't take that .NET magazine's review seriously. They did not justify any of their ratings really.

Though in truth, the two top free boards a Invision and phpBB. They are both free, try them out, pick the one you like most.

Hi,
I recommend phpBB. We use it ourselves and have also set up several boards for clients. Overall, it's a great product.

Being a user who has used both phpbb and invisionboard, I have to say invisionboard is better.

I recommend phpbb and invisionboards, invisionboard is excellent as long as you have decent backup facilities
