View Full Version : Hosting help needed
icthyo 02-27-2001, 12:07 PM Some friends and I run a site that has outgrown its space. We currently host on Pair Networks and have great times but we need more space. We don't have the money or resources to get a dedicated server. I am sick of searching for hosts only to have the too-good-to-be-true woes. We were considering CWI or CI but after reading posts on here we have since abondoned that idea. We are looking for real-life recomendations and testimonials. Right now our needed specs are:
-As much space as possible (1Gig would be nice, but we can work with less)
-10 or more Gig of transfer.
-GOOD tech support staff
-all for around $40 or less monthly (hopefully not too unreasonable)
Please help! Any information leading us to a decent host will be greatly appreciated.
RotoHost 02-27-2001, 12:27 PM Hi,
If you haven't already done so, a quick look through this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053 will give you a list of hosts that frequent this board. 1 gig of storage at that price point may be tough though. :)
Good Luck!
icthyo 02-27-2001, 01:16 PM We have already been to many of these sites and have searched on other host search sites. We are mainly looking for people who are happy with their hosts and would be willing to recommend them (assuming they match up with our site's needs). Hope that someone can help!
Martie 02-27-2001, 01:50 PM Have a look at
http://www.tera-byte.com
Several plans with huge bandwidth allowance.
icthyo 02-27-2001, 01:55 PM Bandwidth is nice at tera-byte but 200Meg is not nearly enough. I do appreciate the reply though. Thanks!
kunal 02-27-2001, 02:45 PM Tera-byte is one of the cheapest and the most highly recommened host for sites using a lot of bandwidht. There bandwidth prices are extremely cheap.
1gig of space, is gonna be tough to find for any virtual account. What does your site run?
acetate 02-27-2001, 03:05 PM I remembered seeing a host that offered 1 gb of space before but they were offering it for $100 something. Don't quite remember the name of the host though. It'll be tough to find one that offers it for around $40, IMHO.
Maybe you should look into getting a dedicated server instead.. ServerHost offers one of it's dedicated server at rought $79.

Good luck!
icthyo 02-27-2001, 03:12 PM Can't afford a dedicated server. We run a independent entertainment company. We have a bunch on animations and music etc. Lots of downloadable stuff. We could even get by with about 500 Meg of space, but more would be better.

Since you have such a tight budget, I think you need to decide on exaclty how much space do you need to start with. The more the better is understood, but we need to be realistic.
icthyo 02-27-2001, 03:46 PM I initially said 1Gig because we will need room to grow. Going as low as 500Meg still gives us room to grow but we may need to change servers again sooner. What we want is to find a host that we can stay with for a long time. We are tired of moving from one host to another.
So, yes, 500Meg is acceptable. We will sacrifice the extra space if it means getting a GOOD host.
Haakon 02-27-2001, 06:55 PM There`s a guy at the advert forum that is offering exactly what you want for 25$!
icthyo 02-27-2001, 07:18 PM I think I see the guy you are talking about. I went to his site today. There is just something bad about hosting with someone who doesn't even <title> their web pages. I've been researching all day, and the best I've come up with is OLM (www.olm.net). They aren't teh best deal, but they do have a great package, and from what I read, great support. Anyone care to comment on them?

icthyo,
Just to question ... are you talking about me here, or are you referring to another advertisement?
check out http://wizardshosting.com They offer 500MB with 12gig transfer for under $40.00.

If you can survive with 500 Meg right now, then think of getting that since with many host you can upgrade your account anytime with no fee at all. I am sure you will agree that your budget will grow with your needs:-)
baileysemt123 02-28-2001, 03:37 PM I recommend Ventures Online
http://www.venturesonline.com
their V5 plan has 500MB with 15 gigs transfer, for <$30, if I remember correctly.
Outstanding support.
Good luck.

I assume we are talking about my site. Please understand, the site is in the middle of a complete redesign
icthyo 02-28-2001, 05:00 PM Alright. I have narrowed down to 4 hosts, all of whom I've heard good things about. Perhaps someone can help me narrow it down to one:
Wizard Hosting
http://wizardshosting.com/
Storage-500MB
Bandwidth-12GB/m
--------------------------------------
Jaguar PC
http://jaguarpc.com
Storage-500MB
Bandwidth-15GB/m
--------------------------------------
Tera-byte
http://www.Tera-byte.com
Storage-200MB
Bandwidth-40GB/m
--------------------------------------
Host Rocket
http://hostrocket.com/
Storage-300MB
Bandwidth-15GB/m
--------------------------------------
Now, before anyone says anything, as far as storage I know that the last 2 don't come close to what I was looking for when I started, but I am more concerned with getting a reliable server at this point. I am leaning toward Tera-byte and Host Rocket. I didn't post prices because I'm not trying to advertise for them. They all fall into my range of payment ($40 or less). Please help out!
sharkman 02-28-2001, 05:23 PM I heared tera Byte is good, and I believe I heared some bad comments about host rocket. If you really going for reputation Tera Bytes is the site you should choose

When I was looking for a permenant host, this forum helped out a lot. I was stuck between wizardshosting and hostrocket and did a search on both within this forum. I'd advise that for you to do also. Two things that made up my mind was, Brendan [host rocket] went to a yearly payment (monthly price went up 1 day before I was going to sign, no execptions) and Carlos [wizardshosting]was reasonable at a monthly price. Another thing was Carlos was answering questions from day one, before I signed up and Brendan wasn't able to answer for days. I understand Brendan had a growth explosion and had to slow business down with the price change, but Carlos' business grew also and didn't miss a beat.
This is just my personal experience and others have been happy with either one. I probably would have been happy with hostrocket but I'm glad I found wizardshosting.
icthyo 03-01-2001, 10:07 AM Thanks for the help! I did do a search a couple of days ago on all 4 host I'm considering (Tera-byte, HostRocket, Wizard Hosting, & Jaguar PC). The only probelm was that all of them seem to be worthwhile hosts. Many good things have been written about all of them. So, I'm still having trouble deciding. (that 40 GIGs of transfer at Tera-byte is looking very appealing though).
