I'm in the process of contacting Web designers and programmers (as well as marketers) in my region to convince them to refer their clients to me for their hosting needs. In exchange, I hope to be able to offer my hosting clients referrals to these services, initially just in my area but hopefully eventually build up a database of people in as many metropolitan areas as possible.

What would be the best way to go about asking for this type of arrangement? I've been emailing people I've been finding, but from the immense amount of business junk mail I get, I imagine they don't really appreciate the solicitation. What is the typical sort of trade/exchange in this type of arrangement? For instance, would a referral exchange be acceptable, or will I need to be willing to make monetary compromises (such as offering discounts) in order for other businesses to refer people to me?

Thanks in advance!

Walk into their office and ask to speak with the person in charge. Tell them you're interested in networking with them and ask them what kind of an arrangement they'd like to be a part of. Offer a few suggestions (mutual referrals, commissions, barter services, etc.).

i think many web design companies have their own dedicated servers as they dont like putting their reputation in the hands of others.

Therefore i would try and target smaller webdesigners, they may already have hosting but im pretty sure that they will remember your name if they ever need hosting in the future.

Create brand awareness!

I agree. Some web designers don't want the hassle as well, so they maybe interested in your affiliate program, if you have one! Ask to speak to the person in charge, call them. It beats e-mail.

Sales phone calls are almost as bad as spam, in my opinion.
