Hmm,

well I pay $15 a year to register at dotster, so if I wanted them that's about what I'd pay. :) Someone might find them interesting enough to use though.

The problem with them as I see it, is the first isn't a real word so therefore reduces it's value. The second is a plural, so people will tend to gravitate towards domaingrabber instead (if it exists). I'm not a domain speculator so I couldn't say for sure. Of course a domain speculator isn't a real authority on domains either *lol* Who would have though a domain with a name like google would have taken off. Sometimes it's the information and services on a domain that will make it work rather than the name itself.

If you wish to sell a domain for anything other than registration value you might wish to develop it first. To use google again, a few years ago they wouldn't have gotten much for the name, but after sticking a pretty handy search engine on it that now draws millions of people to it, it's worth a little more than it reg. value.

I have two four letter domain names, but wouldn't put them up for auction purely as they aren't worth anything. One is a complete set (.com/net/org), and will be turned into something one day. In a few years I might see what it's worth.

how about omegawest.net/com? =) How much do these worth?

To the person who has omegawest.org probably a fair bit *lol* To anyone else, as above in my last post. Domains are a dime a dozen, and if you don't find the one you want, you can usually find one close enough, or another variation on your business name, or idea.

I remember reading somewhere a while ago the guy who owns cool.com was offered 60 million or some bizarre amount like that. He figured he'd make more out of the site doing it himself so he turned them down... Personally I think he was crazy - I don't see $60 mill worth in the site that's there. Bad design, aimed at teens.. maybe I'm wrong.

The first thing to *maybe* get a better offer for a domain is to actually own all three TLD's (.com/net/org) People feel better about owning a domain name that isn't going to be over shadowed by someone with a different extension.

akashik... thanks for the appraisal! :D
Actually, I have it appraised for much higher than what you think. Though I don't believe their appraisal (too bad) :)

Anyway, since akashik.net is not a real word and the fact that it's a .net and not a .com, if you want to sell it, I will buy it for <$10 since that's how much I get for registering a domain ;)

Actually it was my opinion, not an appraisal :)

And yeah akashik.net isn't worth a cent to anyone but me. A good example too, of why domains aren't worth anything if they aren't the whole three. Two months before I registered it, someone went and registered akashik.com (a record company). I contacted them about buying it off them, but didn't get a response. As music and hosting don't conflict very much I never bothered too much. I did go and grab the .org one which just redirected back to the .net one Funnily enough, it gets a bit of traffic going through it even though I've never promoted the .org one at all. I presume it's people net searching it for registration. It's actually a zen bhuddist term for "The Font of Knowledge" so I suppose it may attract some non-english hits. Asia's a pretty big place after all. Bit of a shame I don't speak the hundreds of languages throughout asia - or even one of them for that matter *lol*

As with most anything, domain names are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. I feel many aren't worth any more than it costs to register them. It takes time and effort to develop a site into something worthwhile, not just the right name. I think Yahoo and Google, and many other search engines prove that point. Even Amazon.com, named after a mythical group of women, serves as a good example.

I know of many sites that have domain names some would consider desirable, yet the sites have little or no value.

As the bard said "What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." The reverse is also true. Excrement by any other name would stink just as much.

I'm a little different (Oh, Ok. A lot different) but I never mistakenly type .net or .org. I don't worry about someone mistakenly going to jdolls.net instead of jdolls.com (my wife's site) so I didn't bother registering the .net and .org. (Of course now there are a lot more dots to consider.) Also, if the .com is not available I look for another name.

But that's just me. I can understand a large outfit wanting to tie up all near-names.
