Could a Raq3 with 32M Ram handle 150,000+ CGI processes each day?

It might, but it would be dog slow at times (assuming that the hits to the site are not spread evenly throughout the day :)).

You are better off with 64 megs, and if you can afford it you should get 128, just to be safe.

No. :)

You'll need as much RAM as you can possibly pack into that Cobalt for 150,000 processes a day. What type of processes, anyway?

Thanks for the reply, the CGI processes are mainly execution of WebBBS scripts (a discussion board script) and some other custom scripts of similar complexity.

chiessa, sounds like we have similar traffic and the majority of mine is through WebBBS also. I was thinking of moving to a RaQ tomorrow/today, what are you thoughts so far on your RaQ? I was looking at the RaQ4 with RackShack.

Thanks

I'm now testing on an account set up for me on my friend's RaQ machine. There're some peculiarities; for example, the CGI scripts run as "web" rather than as myself so that I couldn't access to data directories/files generated with telnet/FTP. It wouldn't be a problem if I have root access with my own RaQ, but then it isn't as secure. Now, I have to set data directories to 707 rather than 705 as I used to do. I thought running CGI scripts as myself is automatic for Apache 1.3.x. Oh well, I was wrong. I'm still trying to get an answer in this regard.

Also, I'm considering a RaQ3 at 4WebSpace. I know RackShack has a better deal, but I'm more comfortable with a company with a proven track record.

Ok 150,000 cgi processes a day is a lot, but can an raq3 easily handle 30,000 cgi processes a day. Say for example 30,000 message board cgi page views, and 10,000 regular page views a day?

If it can handle that was are the upper limits one can handle with no performance issues with various amounts of ram up to 256 megs?

No.

The RaQs can't even handle 200 web sites on them (unless you got one of those $5,000 RaQ4s). They start to get real slow and break after about 160 sites. Anyone else have this problem?

200 websites would be a lot, at 100 - 500 page views per site would be a lot of processing period.
Really I am curious about their ability to handle cgi processing and message board page views.

Well, it *is* a dedicated server. Given enough RAM, it can handle quite a bit. It *isn't* a dual PIII 1 Ghz machine though and thus, don't expect it to perform like one.

I know performance won't be great but will it be better than a snails pace? An raq 3 is a nice crutch or stepping stone for many sites as they come with lots of bandwidth and an affordable cost from many hosts as part of dedicated plans. So I am curious what they can do.

About this, you are better off with RackShack.net, they have a better deal and more speed. They are more reliable too because I have been with both (rackshack.net and 4webspace.com) and my friend had one at 4webspace and we both agree that rackshack.net is better in the long run.

And most importantly rackshack.net has RaQ4i s while 4webspace has RaQ3 s ... The RaQ4i is way better for performance with a faster processor and more tools.

I have worked with raq3 and raq4i and raq4r, and I have found the raq4i and raq4r to be the best....

just my advice.
