View Full Version : how's everyone hosting business going?
DomainNewbie 09-24-2007, 08:45 PM well, I am a new host, just started up in about 2 months. so far not hosting account but sold few domains, well. these day hosting is pretty tough. there are too many competitors but at the end of the day, everyone needs a website or at least a blog. so how's the new players (so do I) are doing?
just asking no offense. since this is forum right?
The Stealthy One 09-24-2007, 09:13 PM We are doing great! I have been in the business for over 3 years, but this company (fxts.net) is new.
As far as getting clients, you must differentiate your service. There are probably over 1 million Web hosting providers out there (including resellers). What makes your service stand out from the rest of them? If you can answer this question, you are set for life! ;)
David 09-24-2007, 09:28 PM DN,
I'm doing fairly well. I started about a year & a half ago and I'm up to nearly 250 clients. Overall it's great :)
I didn't meet my initial goals for the 1st year anniversary but I'm making arrangements to hit them the next time around.
ShoresPC 09-24-2007, 11:08 PM I have recently started up locally and online, so far kinda slow, but I'll keep going. I'm trying to find my niche by doing web design and getting the local small businesses with no website online.
Aussie Bob 09-25-2007, 08:50 AM I'm doing fairly well. I started about a year & a half ago and I'm up to nearly 250 clients. Overall it's great :)
Great going David. Few more years til you cross the 1,000 client mark. :)

Goals are there to be reset if you miss them. :)
supercheaphosting 09-25-2007, 09:16 AM I started today :D, and so far so good. Grabbing clients here and there
jpatton 09-25-2007, 10:24 AM Looking at going online here before too much longer. Been working for quite some time to get the backend working perfectly FAQ and tutorials finished etc. We will see how it goes
dean1012 09-25-2007, 10:45 AM I just launched yesterday morning. I'll admit I haven't had any sales, but I didn't realistically expect any either.
I am very happy with my progress in the first day though. I got my radio AD playing, my banner up, everything went smoothly and I got quite a few visitors (at least 30-40) for my first day.
Hoping for an even better day today :)
Nessy 09-25-2007, 05:38 PM We have been going around 10 months now and i am very pleased with what we have done over those month . Hopefully it will get better and better.
aceadoni 09-25-2007, 05:52 PM We have been around for 3 years and we have a decent client base. We know our niche and stick too it. :-) Other than that the only thing I can suggest is specialize and offer business clients solutions that work. Over time your bottom line will reflect your dedication or lack there of.
It all depends upon your service and how u turn a visitor into client with the information in your website will make a road path to your success.
boonchuan 09-26-2007, 08:22 AM We are celebrating our 11th year in about slightly more than a month's time :) . So far so good......
QiSoftware 09-26-2007, 09:43 AM Not one client in over a year. I am still looking for answers.
Q...
David 09-26-2007, 11:37 AM Great going David. Few more years til you cross the 1,000 client mark. :)
Goals are there to be reset if you miss them. :)
Heck no! I'm going to hit the 1,000 client mark this year. I know it sounds farfetched but it's a goal that I'm not going allow myself to continue to miss.
All I need to do is convince those 250 to tell 4 friends... hm. ;)
Then again, only if God is willing. Perhaps there are alternate plans I'm unaware of but for now, I've set it as my goal.
Within a month I should have the capital to begin my 'mini' advertising scheme & I suspect I'll get back up to the 5 clients a day I was getting just a few months back. With that, I'll easily reach my goal.
LemCorp-Nahuel 09-26-2007, 01:14 PM Things are very quiet on this months but I'm waiting until I release the new sites and sub-companies. Things will have to get better for that time.
Anyway, the business is going well. 2 years now and I'm still alive with a lot of progress =). That makes me very happy.
Qgyen 09-26-2007, 07:06 PM I've been open about 6 months, doing pretty well. Zero advertising, just worth of mouth through friends and clients of friends (basically). I do high-end managed virtual servers, so doing well is only about 10 clients, though my goal was higher profit/client, rather then getting more clients.
Phase 1 of my plan is done and just about on schedule. Working on taking phase 2 live next month, then on to planning stage 3. In total, think I have like 6 phases planned. :)
Patience is hard, as too often I want to go ahead will all my ideas at once, but it is beneficial to do them one at a time, give them time to grow and stabilize, then move on. Plus much better risk wise. :)

You need to find a small niche to focus your energy on, you can't compete with big companies as they have the resources to compete based on pricing and in the big general hosting market. You need to find an area you can devote yourself too and sell your product as a quality service product and not on numbers or price.
For example if you like gaming, start hosting focused on clan hosting, brand your web hosting site to aim at gamers, then spend 4 hours each day for the next six months posting on gaming forums and in your signature have an ad. Pick out about 50 forums and post 3 or 4 really helpful good post every day. With that type of work you will have customers in no time.
The above niche is pretty full though but just an example,
thanks, Ben
ovais 10-01-2007, 02:17 PM We have been doing hosting since 2005 but was targeting local niche with having nearly 500 clients, from May 2007 we started up in whole country and got nearly 800 clients in last 4 months which is fairly well  .Hopefully to cross 2000 clients before 2008 :) (present 1300+).

whole country or whole world?
*E: sry, i misunderstood the post at first. I got it now :)
Outlaw Web Master 10-01-2007, 05:13 PM the hosting side's going pretty good I suppose..
Last month we hit our 4000th customer, so to celebrate I've booked myself a nice south american cruise, then it's off to Australia to show Aussie Bob how to play cricket and try on that pink Tutu of his :)
OK so I blew it with the exaggerations a little :)
I actually only provide hosting for my private design clients but as a whole it's steady enough and the 4000th's closer to 400 really.
owm
Aussie Bob 10-01-2007, 08:43 PM A Scot teach an Aussie to play cricket? Turn it up. :D
The Stealthy One 10-02-2007, 02:06 PM Just as an update - as has been the case in each of my three years in this business, autumn seems to be the best time to get new users. This year is no exception - in the past week alone, we've added nearly 200 new users across all of our brands. :)
unity100 10-02-2007, 02:15 PM Winter moving into spring, and autumn seem to be good times indeed. Maybe the weather ?
The Stealthy One 10-02-2007, 02:19 PM I think it has to do with the fact that it is not summer - so, most folks are on the computer more, and working on projects that make use of Web hosting services.
^^(At least, that's what I like to think! :P)
So far, November has always seemed to be the best month of the year for me.
Aussie Bob 10-03-2007, 03:36 AM Winter moving into spring, and autumn seem to be good times indeed. Maybe the weather ?
Silly billy, there's no weather on the interwebs. :D :P
ServerPlace4NET 10-03-2007, 08:44 AM We are doing pretty good. Been in the business for nearly 5 years, and have seen many host come and go. The thing that made us " stable" is we have found our own niche, and grabbed a pretty big hosting contract with a customer. For nearly the past 3 years, most of our resources have gone to serve the same customer base. Currently we are preparing to open our doors to new customers with a marketing campaign, but there isn't any rush like there was years ago. If you are new to the hosting business, just take your time and make sure you do everything the right way.
James Daniels 10-03-2007, 10:01 AM I haven't started yet and have had to put things on hold as I have been away, but it is interesting to see how others are doing and the problems they are facing!I would like to see some comments from large hosts and see how the seasonal sign up rates affect them on a larger scale? Do you advertise more during slow periods to compensate for the slowness?
Bannaz 10-03-2007, 10:20 AM Sounds like a lot of guys doing well. :) How many of you are advertising through banner adverts?
MikHo 10-03-2007, 04:26 PM I started my business 2 years ago and it went pretty good for starters, I had alot of friends that needed hosting in different ways.
unfortunatly i had some personal problems after only 8 months and couldnt run the business as I would liked it to.
So this year its a new gear and hopefully I have teamed up with a good partner to really boost business.
RockServices 10-03-2007, 06:54 PM Being in a team really help don't it MikHo.
Keep it up :D
MikHo 10-03-2007, 06:59 PM Being in a team really help don't it MikHo.
Keep it up :D
atleast it splits the burden, but also the profit :stickout:
Thank you for the kind words
MPDon 10-03-2007, 08:41 PM We seem to be doing well..about 3-4 customers every week, which is pretty good for only about 2 months into it. It has pretty much come down to where and whom I advertise to. Surprisingly, I either have small business needing e-commercial software, or anime fans that want to make a website with their favorite anime character/show. lol
realvaluehosting 10-04-2007, 09:15 AM Wow! We are celebrating our 5th birthday and we are growing everyday. We now serve 75+ countries. Really feels very good, isn't it!
