I have been thinking of starting my own webhost.. While looking through the slews of hosting and line solutions i have noticed allot of people charge for the hardware. It isn't even good hardware I could build a machine for much less(Minus the hard drive which would have to be $C$I) in the charge for 2-4 months.
I'm just not getting it.

If you're starting out and money is not really a problem, then lease from someone like site5, pwebtech etc. $400 to $500/mth will get you a great server. If you don't want to start at that level, get a reseller account from the $20 to $75/mth price range.
You could always colo your own machines etc. Plenty of options. If you want providers to make you offers, post a request into the advertising forum at the bottom of this forum. :)

The charges are not only of hardware, they include bandwidth, maintenance and support cost.
So if you are thinking that you can make $1K server = 5months*$200
then what about the bandwidth and support cost of those 5 months? Its not just a server, its a whole infrastructure that is linked with that server.

What im saying is with these packages. Like one company i looked at if you want to upgrade the hard drive, from 60gig to 80 gig they charge you an extra 30$ a month. Why a month? Why not just charge a one time setup fee?

Well companies like RackShack charge $99 a month for some of their servers, so by charging $30 per month for a hard drive, they can make up for the cheap prices of their server...
