buy yourself a book on advertising. that's going to yield the best return for $20.
i recommend books by jeff gitomer, harry beckwith, or if you want to go old school, napolean hill.

I couldn't agree more. You won't see any return on a pocket change advertising budget. Honestly, real returns with traditional advertising won't even be had under $10,000. However, if you get creative that number can be significantly reduce - although under no circumstance to $20.

Have you looked into banner advertising? You can really broaden your client base by putting your name out there.
$20 won't get you much at all in this industry, but you will find some cheap offers in the related offers section for cheap advert slots. This small exposure can result in a few leads.

$20 isn't a lot of cash to advertise. Unfortunately marketing in general is very hit and miss. I totally agree. Buying a book would be the best start to learning about advertising and marketing. Remember- putting in your due diligence will always pay off - even if you don't realize it immediately.

Invite a local businessperson out to dinner (maybe McDonald's?). That's what I'd use the $20 for. You can't really get much else with it.

Any books that anyone would recommend on advertising?

I would use that $20 to place a banner ad on as many webmaster forums as I could. If you can get an ad on a web hosting forum thats great, if not, a webmaster forum will do just fine.

I would rather use the free advertising methods available from hosting directories to hosting forums. If you want to use paid ads, be prepared to put more then $200/month.
However, based on experience ispcheck.com proved to offer some good results for us.
