The problem with this is that whois servers are mainly rate limited and often many hours behind the real registry databases.

Constructing a domain availability checker is not easy.
I have had kids tell me its easy to do and they could do it in a day, but with all the differing registry system its much more complex than it appears.
Ours was written by someone who wrote some of the standard PHP programming books and it took him about two weeks. A couple of days to write the script and 10 days to iron out all the quirks with all the registries.
Even then we spend a lot of time keeping on top of it.

One of the tricks is to hold the connections to the registries open as this speeds up the checking considerably, but to do this you may have to have permission from the registries involved.
