Hi all, I wanted peoples opinions of whether or not the below harware would be sufficient to start my hosting company..
667MHz Pentium 3 CPU
128MB PC133 SDRAM
20GB IDE Hard Drive
1U Rackmout Server Case
30GB Monthly Bandwidth Allotment
$3/GB Bandwidth Overage Charges
It is upgradable and extra bandwidth is at $3 GB..
Should i upgrade anything initially ?
Please let me know your opinions,
Thanks
John

I'd throw in another 128MB of RAM (or maybe even another 256), but apart from that it is a well balanced system.

It would be best to have a backup system too if you are running a hosting company. Easiest way is to stick another drive in and backup to that, safest (from hackers) would probably be a tape backup
Thanks guys, I cant afford to add everything just yet but i certainly will enhance the system as i earn money. My main concerns are stability, the system needs to be stable, what areas do i need to enhance or are they sufficient to make sure uptime is optimal ?
Do you think 30 GB Bandwidth is good enough to start with ? $3 per GB over that..
Thanks again.

I'd still throw in another 128MB of RAM. Many systems become unstable -- or just plain rediculously slow -- when they get short of memory, and the extra memory (should) be pretty cheap.

Well, RAM is cheap... But if you go with dedicated server, upgrading RAM will cost you setup fee and mostly additional monthly prices... Anyway, I do agree that additional RAM and additional HD would be better... Will make your monthly price more expensive though, and that's why I choose to build my own server and colo it :)

Extra RAM is the big thing, 256Mb would be better than 128Mb but if you can afford to put more in the do it, it will make your life so much better in the future.
Tape is securer then a 2nd hard disk, but most hosts use a 2nd hard disk for backup purposes as it is convenient and you don't have to pay someone to rotate tapes which they may or may not do.
