View Full Version : Hosting Questions
DivaInJeanz 07-29-2002, 01:14 AM Hello everyone!
I'm still looking for hosting :bawling: but had a few quick questions that I'm hoping you could help me out with :)
There are some hosting companies that offer a minimum of 100mb for a basic hosting package, and others offer quite a bit more...but how much of this space to customers usually use?
Some packages include an IP address..not to sound like an airhead lol but what exactly is it for? would it be the same as an ip address i already have with my dsl service? differences/similiarties?
What is the best kind of server to have with a hosting company? (speed etc.) I've heard of the oc-12,etc..which is fastest and most reliable?
Thanks!:D

jared3404 07-29-2002, 01:16 AM Our basic plan offers 1000MB, however most of our customers use about 3-5MB.

Normally not even 50 mb depending on the type of site

Dedicated IP is a IP dedicated to your site only mainly for SSL etc,

OC12 is a good line. But 0c192 I blelieve is the Fastest. It is hard to keep up with. LOL
Thanks!
smidwap 07-29-2002, 01:31 AM If your site has interactivity based in various languages such as php, cgi, etc...then your hard disk space used can jump up quite quick. A commonly used script is a forum, and if your forums are popular, both bandwith and HD space used will jump up faster than you can even check your updated-daily statistics.
As for IP addresses, as TimPD said, they are used for SSL. Also, they allow Anonymous FTP use. They can also be useful when your domain is down.
I believe speed is USUALLY measued by how fast the server hardware is and the number of users/accounts on it, not usually the bandwith providor. That is unless your hosting providor has some cheap bandwith providor with slow lines. No hosting companies will be running a data center off of a 24k modem :stickout ...nor a Cable modem  .

DivaInJeanz 07-29-2002, 01:56 AM well, im mostly looking to start a portfolio type site with pictures, etc (ex. stuff i created using photoshop, illustrator, etc). would 100mb be sufficient? with 10gb of transfer? or would you suggest getting more?

To begin with I think that seems fine. Space wont necessarily be an issue at first, it will more depend on how popular your site gets, and how much bandwidth is being used. 10gb is planety when starting out, I would be suprised if you use 1 or 2gb per month for a while.
Obviously the larger the image file you put up, the more space you will use, so if you put up the PSD or ILL files then that will take huge amounts of space, but if you leave it at JPG, GIF and PNG then it will take you a long time to fill the 100mb.
The host you go with will undoubtedly have plans with more space and bandwidth, so if you do get to your limits fairly quickly, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to upgrade your account with them.
Hope that helps :)
