I would emphasize that these prices are indicative only as they are not yet finalized, but, this is what GoDaddy are saying about the oncoming ICANN approved price increases.

Verisign/ICANN price increase on October 14th or 15th. Price increase has yet to be finalized but, it will be at least $0.42 per domain. It has not been confirmed yet but the domains may have the following increase, (.COM - $0.63)(.NET $0.74)(.ORG - $0.22)(.INFO - $0.70)(.BIZ - $1.90). Ask me about renewing early to avoid this price hike.

Their current prices are COM - $9.15, NET - $9.19, ORG - $9.19, BIZ - $8.19, INFO - $3.15 (on sale). https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/search.asp?isc=retgs&app%5Fhdr=&ci=2629

It looks like they're out to gouge us.

Stu,

This may be a good time to take advantage of a transfer for some folks.

I did for a number of domains I had on SRSPlus and transferred them to StarGate.

SRSPlus price was $7.95 for renewal with increase of $.50 on September 22nd.

StarGate transfer price was $5.95. No word on price increase at StarGate but I am sure it will come. I just saved $2.00 a domain. Money in my pocket...;)

Check out these coupons code for renewal they may work for .com/.net;

It would be nice if some competition was introduced into the registry system. Maybe we should be able to choose both the registrar as well as have various registry options to select from. ICANN should give GoDaddy the chance to do for the .com registry what they already did for the .com domain market.

As far i remember, godaddy did a venture with afilias, runner of info, to go t the .us cctld registry power.

I'm not talking about coupon codes I'm talking about gouging. No coupon code can offset that.

COM (BEFORE 9.15-6.20=2.95) (AFTER 9.78-6.42=3.36) (GOUGE 3.36-2.95=0.41)
NET (BEFORE 9.19-4.70=4.49) (AFTER 9.93-4.92=5.01) (GOUGE 5.01-4.49=0.52)
ORG (BEFORE 9.19-6.20=2.95) (AFTER 9.41-6.42=2.99) (GOUGE 2.99-2.95=0.04)
BIZ (BEFORE 8.19-6.20=1.99) (AFTER 9.99-6.42=3.57) (GOUGE 3.57-1.99=1.58)

NB: I'm not entirely sure of the old and new costs prices of the BIZ and ORG tlds. But for illustrative purposes this shows gouging going on.

Their motto of being cheap, won't be so true anymore. Even pennies gouged on 20 million domains would leapfrog them into profitability. This is gouging on a grand scale. If they go ahead with these proposed increases, look for announcements about their improved profitability over thenext year.

The other 'perspective' is that they are taking this opportunity to improve their margins. Verisign changes are really the only opportunity that they have to increase prices without getting flak or taking a competitive risk. They will be stuck with these new margins for many years.

In the last months this is not the only change in pricing structure

ICANN reduced the fee from 0.25$ to 0.20$, but nearly no registrar modified the pricing.

Now verisign increase their fee by 0.42$, so registrar increase the pricing

REAL cost increase is 0.42$ - 0.05$ (icann reduced) = 0.37$

Yes, they are improving their margins.

Gouging on a grand scale. Most other registrars increased their prices by $0.50. Which equals $0.08 gouge. Which is reasonable imho.

Well then, you get to choose to do business with other registrars. I dont see any gouging here - still a pretty good price for a domain name. If you dont like the price, exert your right as a consumer and shop elsewhere. :)

The registry prices for .info and .biz are lower than .com , but most registrars charge the same price

Exactly.

I don't think its wrong of Godaddy to take the opportunity to add a few cents... thats life and its happening all over the place every day, you should be thankful domains are as cheap as they are!!

Pretty much every other registrar is taking "a few cents" (0.50-0.42=0.08). As I said. That is reasonable. But GoDaddy is taking a whopping 0.41 on COM and 1.58 on BIZ. I don't call that "a few cents" on 20 million domains. Also, they never did lower their prices on NET when the registry lowered their price to $4.50. Look at the whopping $4.49 they are currently making on the NET. Almost 100% profit. This is price gouging, pure and simple.

I really don't want to sound like a zealot, but I am impassioned. As a domainer with thousands of domains, it is impossible to completely rid yourself of GoDaddy. I buy and sell GoDaddy domains every day. I need good prices for renewals. With this move (if implemented), GoDaddy will become uncompetively priced compare to other registrars. So I will be exercising my rights as a consumer ;)

Of course GoDaddy can do this because they are the 900lb gorilla in the registration market. They can get away with it. Actually, I like GoDaddy as a registrar (except for some of their ToS and checkout). They have absolutely the best control panel for managing multiple domains. C'est la vie!

OK. they came to their senses and finalized the prices at a lower level.

Price increase was just confirmed for us yesterday.

!!! IMPORTANT !!! *** VeriSign and ICANN are increasing the registry fees for domain names. The increase will happen on October 14th. (.COM - $0.43)(.NET $0.36)(.ORG - $0.15)(.INFO - $0.15)(.BIZ - $1.15) Ask me about renewing early to avoid this price increase.

That's

.COM (9.15+0.43) 9.58
.NET (9.19+0.36) 9.55
.ORG (9.19+0.15) 9.34
.INFO (3.15+0.15) 3.30
.BIZ (8.19+1.15) 9.35

Admittedly you can get 10% off with the SAVETEN coupon and maybe more with other coupons. Which gives you $8.62 for .COM registrations & renewals. That's not too bad but it still looks like there are going to be many registrars cheaper than GoDaddy after Oct 14th.

GoDaddy is in a fantastic market position right now. They undercut the competition for several years to get millions of customers...

... and now they can finally raise their prices to a reasonable level (or higher) and they will finally make some money.

It's pretty standard business practice for any company that has the capital to last for x years while operating at a lose to gain customers.

Once they raise prices, then some other "new" company will become the popular flavor and the whole thing starts over with someone else.

It's too bad registerfly died from their internal problems, because I'm certain they would have done the same thing in a year or so.

Not a fan, but I can't count on many other registrars and feel safe with my domains like I've been with GD. But it's a business at the end of the day. I'm sure you would all do the same.

My thoughts exactly mrzippy. The possible buyout/merger with Google also comes to mind ;)

Google is just about the only company that has the market clout to take down godaddy. (ie: If google put up a domain registration/transfer form on their site at a reasonable price, I think millions would jump to them on the first day.)

However, I think googles current motto of "do no evil" prohibits them from merging with godaddy. ;) Also, I don't think google wants to get into the retail business game.

Googleapps too function via domainsite.com domains , see the bottom part of domainsite.com

Anyway, i think as a Registrar when they go WIDELY if sometime go, the TOS can be godaddy's style.

We recd. a similar mail from DirectI also.

Verisign is INCREASING .COM prices by $0.42. We in turn are REDUCING your .COM pricing by $0.10! Which means, with every Domain Renewal during The Great Renewal Bash, you are saving $0.52 per Domain Renewal year.

Here's a quick recap of this promotion - our gTLD (.com, .net, .info, .org, .biz) Renewal and Transfer-in rates have been slashed down to just $6.39!! (It is one of the best opportunities for you to renew or transfer in as many Domains as possible and SAVE big bucks, since all major gTLD prices will be increasing soon!)

I do find it interesting how GoDaddy specifically promises they will not raise rates more than the registry...or perhaps they used the percentage loophole:

Maybe. But they're still resellers for eNom & GoDaddy, afaik. I think their accreditation is more for what they can learn about domain registrations, et al, rather than selling directly to the public.
