Hi,

I am thinking of hosting a cgi based chat site. Can anyone please tell me which host companies allow customised cgi chat scripts. On top of that, I will also set up a discussion board with 6 topics. What sort of bandwidth limit shall I start with? Many thanks

Henry

Which chat script will you be using? Everychat? e_chat? Chatpro?

hlj, mosts wouldnt allow you to host a CGI chat script, because they are really CPU and RAM intensive. It would be very difficult to find one which wont kick you off soon. I would suggest, you get yourself a dedicated server, as I dunt see any other option.

hlj,

You should post your e-mail address so hosts can e-mail you directly. :)

Yes, I know that not many hosting companies can facilitates this, even though the script is simply (I wrote myself). At the moment it does not draw many visitors, if it becomes popular I may consider the dedicated server option. Thanks again.

I suggest instead to get a java IRC client like JPilot and just have it connect to a IRC server. There are several good IRC networks you can use. It removes all the load issues since people's own PC's will do all the processing. Plus for those more advanced they can use their own IRC clients like mIRC!

Hello
I think you will find that any of the VDI based / Cpanel3 hosts have a built in text and java chat client that you can use.
The text one is very ugly, but the java one is OK and seems quite reliable.
