View Full Version : Jet plane just flew by...
Synthetic 07-28-2002, 04:27 PM Wow... a jet/war plane (what are they called? ) just flew above my house. The thing was LOUD and SCARY... I've never heard nor seen one before, it was a bit of a shock. At first I thought it was a commercial plane about to hit the ground. In addition, police cars were rushing by with their siren on, so that really got my heart pumping. :D
The Vancouver Molson-Indy is on, so I guess its got something to do with that.
Sorry, just felt like posting this.

Hurcules?
c130?
Samuel 07-28-2002, 04:30 PM Thats pretty cool huh =)
My wife and I used to work for various sub contractors of the military and aero space companies and had on many occasions the chance to witness, c130's taking off, f18's flying by, and a whole other gamut of other types of planes, even a blackhawk helicopter base was one of our destinations and man each time I was just in awe.
Truly massively powerful machines and when one is 2000 feet over your head turning the sound is incredible.
Glad you had a chance to witness it =)
mindboggle 07-28-2002, 04:30 PM A couple months ago I saw three jets flying around and going upside down, it was cool. I also used to see the Concord occasionally, but it doesn't come by any more.
dialuphost 07-28-2002, 04:43 PM Ya, I am in the silicon valley and this has been happening above my house for the past 2 days...kinda weird
Samuel 07-28-2002, 04:48 PM Boddy, I am about 40 miles east from you, where do you think these jets are flying out of?
Synthetic 07-28-2002, 04:51 PM My asumption is that they're flying out of Seattle, not sure how true that is though.
ScottD 07-28-2002, 04:54 PM When I was 10 years old I was sitting in the St. Louis airport, waiting to board an Eastern Airlines plane to take us to Atlanta, then to Orlando to go to Disney World.
While sitting there, I looked out over yonder and saw a fighter jet sitting, in the air, about 200 feet off the ground. I tell ya, it's incredible to witness a Harrier in flight! Never in my life since that moment has any other airplane made impressed me.
I spent a lot of time in St. Louis back then, with Mc Donnald Douglas right there I got to see the F18's while being fitted for their first Blue Angel flights, old F4's and F15's used to fly around all the time. F4's are still the meanest looking planes out there.
I can't wait for the JSF to go to production. That is one plane that may impress me to see it live.

Maybe it was C-IHost trying to go into space :D :D :D
dialuphost 07-28-2002, 05:01 PM I have no idea, but Moffet Field is right next door, even though I think it is closed down now, but let me tell you its freaky when you look outside and there is a jet fighter plane outside your house circling around
RackNine 07-28-2002, 05:03 PM At first I thought it was a commercial plane about to hit the ground.
I understand completely. I'd forgotten we had an airshow here awhile back and was in my car making a turn just as one of the show fighters flew overhead. The bang was so loud and sudden I thought I'd blown a tire!

Yea, this is why I asked, not sure why seattle is mentioned, maybe their is another silicon valley in wa?, Silicon Valley to me and I'm sure dialuphost is just south of San Francisco
Synthetic 07-28-2002, 05:13 PM Yes, that's correct. I was just confused over something and posted Seattle.
Samuel 07-28-2002, 05:15 PM Is it silicon vineyards you were thinking of? (Just Wondering)
Studio64 07-28-2002, 05:24 PM Thats the sound of freedom....
The Prohacker 07-28-2002, 05:50 PM My grand father used to work for Rockwell International aka Boeing, and I used to get up in the 5am time when he got off, go with my grand mother to pick him up from work, and sit on the parking lot, just a few hundred feet from the air field...
You could set and watch F15's, F16's, get tested out...
Its amazing to see them push the plans to the max... Sometimes, I'd see them stand the plane on the tail a few hundred feet above the ground and hold it there, then shoot off into the air...
Thats something I loved about Tulsa, you'd see B2 stealth bombers flying around, and differnt war aircraft all the time...
XTStrike 07-28-2002, 06:03 PM ---

not very stealthy then i take it ??? :D  :D
thewitt 07-28-2002, 06:08 PM The B52 is invisible to radar, not the human eye...that's why they fly combat missions at night in planes painted black underneath...

XTStrike 07-28-2002, 06:19 PM yeah, thats right thewitt, you just go ruining my joke with facts

Actually it's a pretty funny story why they are painted black...
The designers origanally wanted it painted a dark pastel blue of random shades but, the testers hated it...
Top guns don't want to fly pastel planes...
They want to fly black ones...

That was for the F-117.. It is truely a black plane...
The B2 is a dark grey....

No, I think they were CF-18's but I only got a 2 second glimpse through the buildings downtown. They made two passes and were gone.
rockergrrl 07-29-2002, 04:44 AM We get all kinds of planes flying above us.
We have McDill Air Force base about 1 1/2 hours (drive) from here -- in Tampa (home offices of the whole Afghanistan thing). So we get lots of fighter jets, etc flying over us from there.
And we have airliners flying less than 500 feet up in the air -- all the time. We have an airport that's 6 miles from my house -- and we're directly in the flight path.
It was quite freaky at first when we first moved here... But you get use to it.
I have a friend that lives about a 15 minute drive from Newark (NJ) Airport (where one of the planes on Sept 11th came from), and its even worse than that there -- she was especially freaked out after Sept 11th.
Studio64 07-29-2002, 04:29 PM When I used to work in the Audio industry one of our favorite venues was directly underneath Hartsfeild (Atlanta, GA) landing pattern.
It was an outdoor venue and the best thing you could see was planes lined up for miles on mile, especially at night it was always a string of lights until the horizon.... Why did we like to see them?..
Becase those planes were our first warning of bad weather... Whenever bad weather would move into the area the lights would disappear about 30 minutes before hand... The Air Traffic controllers would re-route planes away from bad weather. So we always had warning before a storm came, usually enough time to cover all unmovable equipment and batten down the hatches for the rest.
I also used lived approx 5 miles from Dobbins AFB in ATL. It was really cool sometimes just to sit out there and watch these C-130's do touch and go's (touch the runway on landing and take back off again) for hours on end. I've also seen AirForce One land there with it's complete cadre of escort vehicles... Had 2 wingmen and 3 tailing planes along w/ a flurry of choppers around the area doing assorted things, all of them heavily laden w/ death producing devices...
Right after 9-11 Dobbins was a flurry of activity. Any fighter you could imagine was taking off at full speed and doing low alitutude runs over ATL all day and night...
I personally witnessed a car accident due to AF Planes a few weeks ago... Where I live now we have so many AF bases around..
AFB Maxwell, ANGB Dannelly, Gunter, Benning to name the ones I know of (Those are the ones within 100 miles of my house)...
These bases are used for training (I think) most of the time...
I was driving on I-85 and I heard a blistering loud rumble that completely drowned out my music (and I listen to very loud music) and looked up through the windsheild of my car to see 2 Jets (I have no clue what they were, flying way to fast to get a good look) belly to belly, one wing at the ground, one wing skyward, screaming directly over and parallell to the highway, pretty much just goofing off...
I was staring and I'm sure everyone else was too... As I drove on for the next 2 miles I saw 3 pairs of cars on the side of the road that were involved in fender benders... I'm fairly sure as a result of this....
None the less.... As I stated in a previous post... That sound, is the sound of freedom....
ned patter 07-29-2002, 04:48 PM It's funny you should mention this actually because about a week ago a big kind of jetty thing flew over very low although the airports very near here it's not normal and it was going the wrong way and also a helicopter flys over like 3 times a week..
Low flying planes are scary like, very very noisy.
I tried with my scanners to see who it was but nut i'm sure there not daft enough to leave such secret flying radio transmission unencrypted.
Rotifer 07-29-2002, 05:22 PM Interesting story (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8131-2002Jul26.html) in the Washington Post about two F-16s pursuing a "UFO". I had a tanker fly low and slow over my house recently while refueling - phenomenally loud. I suppose they can't turn while engaged?

I've tried a few times to sit out side w/ my frequency counter to find the radio comm frequencies (at least ones not already listed) but, this was simply to shear off bordem, nothing of a real serious enterprise....

mdrussell 07-29-2002, 06:49 PM We have 3 highly active military air bases within a ~20 mile radius of us. Plenty of aircraft (both RAF and USAF) to keep me entertained.
There has been a lot of activity lately, it seems to be a build up to the strike on Iraq.
Btw, you think an aircraft is noisy at 2000 feet? Try 400 - 600 feet at 4am
MGCJerry 07-29-2002, 07:42 PM I live by 2 Naval Air bases... It was 3... Mayport, & Towers Field. The other was Cecil Field, and many think that the govt is still using it as there are still military planes flying in and out. I also live near some train tracks, but its all noise that you learn to ignore. Its usually some P-3s, C-130s, KC-135s, AH-64 apaches, some F-18's, the occasional F-16s & A-6s.
You wanna talk about noise, imagine standing bout 600 feet away from a harrier that is in hover a whole 20 feet above the ground... That's loud ;)
I suppose they can't turn while engaged?
Well... They can, but I don't see why they would want to ;)
Rotifer 07-29-2002, 07:56 PM Well... They can, but I don't see why they would want to
I think they must maintain a certain altitude and airspeed when flying over cities in the U.S. Several years ago a local woman sued the Navy when one of there planes buzzed her while she was riding her horse. Apparently she was severely injured when the horse threw her.
akashik 07-30-2002, 02:36 AM The best noise I've heard was once when we were driving on McCord Airforce Base (the shopping is cheaper out there - no tax). The road out winds around the end of the runway. Just as we drove past an F-18 was taking off on full burn and must have passed over us at about 150 feet. You could feel that rumble in your teeth :)

punaboy 07-30-2002, 03:22 AM Wow, it's so entertaining to read all these posts. I spent 8 yrs in the USAF at SAC/TAC/ACC bases. I now live less then 10 minutes away from Nellis AFB. Most of the stories here was/is part of life for me. It's funny how a group of people can all have their own interpretation just from a jet flying over head. It's fun/cool to here all the different views. I myself sometimes wonder what's going on when there is extra activity going on. Most of the times it's just generations, maneuvers, sorties or training.
p.s.
the story about B-52's and radar...hehehe, good one!
Fandesigns 08-03-2002, 11:26 AM I wonder if something is up. I live near Tampa, which is where the US Central Command is for overseas. But in the last two weeks, on and off we have suddenly had fly-bys of 4 F-16 fighter aircraft. Now McDill Airforce Base is not host to these fighter aircraft, most to a large squadren of the HUGE refuelers tankers. The fighter aircraft are from Homestead AFB I assume, which is where they scrambled them when that kid plew his plane into a building downtown Tampa.
SO I do think it is odd, because we did not have this much aircover just after 9/11. It is nice seeing them fly over though. They like to be noisey and impressive about it. Oh, and yes, they are armed. They get low enough that you can see all the missles straped to thier underbelly.
punaboy 08-03-2002, 12:03 PM Cool Fandesigns! Maybe there's some extra activitiy because of that Sadam thing. Anyway just a reminder to all of us, those aircrafts are the reason we can choose our religion, live in which ever city/state we choose, eat when/where/what we want, smoke or don't smoke, where the clothes we like and... well you get the picture.
ned patter 08-03-2002, 12:12 PM Up here in Scotland there's allot of these low planes and they have been banned from some parts cause there flying over and killing the wild animals..

DoobyWho 08-03-2002, 12:36 PM Funny this happend cause it JUST happend to me about 5 min ago.
App-Jason 08-07-2002, 09:08 AM Punaboy is definitely in the best place to see weird stuff flying around since he's right near Nellis. Nellis is the closest base to the famed Area 51.
We see our fair share of military aircraft here in Massachusetts. I'm right outside of Westover AFB, so I always see mammoth C-5's flying around. They look like they're going to fall right out of the sky. We see a lot of aircraft in transit that are just passing through too- F-16's, ANG A-10's heading to Barnes, an occasional F-15 making a loop out of Otis on the Cape, KC-135's, EP-3 Orions, C-130's, and even one F-117 about 8 years ago. I'll never forget how that plane flew. He was coming in about 2 or 3 days before an airshow here and was hauling ass and zigzagging all over the place.
The weekend after Sept. 11th freaked me out though- two 16's came over the house low and REAL hot heading east towards Boston to check out a Cessna that wandered where he shouldn't have been. You could hear the Viper thumping the whole way once he passed by. They busted the guys ass later on. Can you imagine sitting in a Cessna 172 and two F-16's come out of nowhere and are all over you? Hairy.
