I don't have my own server I pay for web space and I want to know if it is possible for me to have a .htaccess 404 page that will redirect 'bad link followers' of my website to a page that is linked back to the home page.

I have tried uploading the file but 'i dont have permission'
Any help would be appreciated

Perhaps you should contact your host's support and ask them how to do it on their system.

On our systems, our customers can just upload a .htaccess file (or edit it with a shell program such as pico). Your host will need to have AllowOverrides enabled in their main Apache configuration file, but they should know about that.
