View Full Version : Old Emails Being Deleted (cPanel/WHM)

I have a server running cPanel/WHM and I have a recurring issue with my IMAP mail accounts. It seems that every week my Trash folder gets truncated and all messages older than x number of days (seems to be about 30 days) get deleted. I have e-mail going back over a year that I'd like to keep, so this is a problem. I've just been restoring the mail from backup, but it seems to be recurring thing every week where my e-mail gets deleted.

I use Thunderbird for mail and can't find anything in the client that would be causing this, and I can't find anything in WHM that would allow me to configure this, either.

Is this a hidden option somewhere that I should be looking for? I'm kind of baffled over this!

Thanks,

Brandon

Have a check of the horde setting for the email, to see if any rule is added.

If you are accessing your mail via IMAP with Thunderbird, note that virtually all IMAP clients, including Thunderbird, have an option to delete deleted mail older than a certain period. Thunderbird is a bit clunky with its IMAP settings. The option is there, just helped someone set it up a few days ago myself, but I wouldn't know where it is off the top of my head.

I've set Thunderbird's retention policy to not use the "Server Default".. hopefully that should do the trick. But I only then wonder if there's some kind of "server default" that I can change on the server-side to prevent this from happening to other mail users on the server?

This problem is still occurring every week. It's driving me absolutely nuts!

Hi,

probably a stupid question, but why don't you download the mails and back your mailclient up regularly?

It's an IMAP account.

Hi,

well, last time I used one (never do these days due security) it was possible to pull local copies. Then it's pretty irrelevant whether the mail on the server gets deleted.

And regarding your question, if it's an IMAP account, do others have access? May it be the client of a co-user which messes with your mailbox?

Greetings

No, it's not irrelevant at all. I want my mail to be stored on my server so I can access it from different machines and so that I don't have to worry about having copies on all of my machines. I don't need to pull local copies. I'm aware of how to pull local copies. I just would like for things to stop being "cleaned up" on the server side.

Can anyone provide any further insight on this issue? It still happens every Tuesday; all messages over a couple months old in my Trash get wiped.
