Ok, we've all seen the casual mentions in threads when hosting as we know it now will be made redundant by future technologies and fibre hooked up to all homes etc...etc...
I thought I'd open an thread and discuss this issue in some depth. Is the above scenario a possibility? Speculation welcomed. :)

I don't think it will be made redundant/obsolete, at least in not in this decade.
Being a fellow Australian Bob, you'll probably have noticed how shockingly unreliable (and expensive if you want a static IP) broadband is here in Australia.
Other countries - possibly. With reliable, high speed connectivity combined with a static IP becoming affordable overseas - people who already have the necessary skills are moving their sites into their own machines hosted in their home or place of business.
I know some people in the US with business grade DSL lines who host their own sites with no problems at all.

I think we have a long way to go before people will be hosting web sites from home on a more permanent basis.
Bandwdith costs are still enormous at the moment, and being from Australia, I can say it will be many decades yet before it's a viable option here. Lets face most people in Australia still use dial connections to the net, because the cost of getting broadband (if they can actually get it at all) is just too expensive. Then you have capped downloads etc and dynamic Ip's and it makes it all way to fiddly.
By the time the technology is able to allow people to host from home, the internet as we know it will be vastly different to what we see today.
I'm looking forward to the day we can "walk" the web. You know put on a helmet and gloves and see web sites and three dimensional images and interaction with sites and people is all "live" through the helmet and glove. although the down side to being able to more fully experience the wbe like that would be advertising, I mean imagine the porn ads then......

Hosting won't disappear.....
Why do big companies w/ high speed internet access host w/ another company?...
Why don't all college students (like myself) host their own sites off their own computer (I did and I eventually bought hosting)?
Answer? Managed servers...
It's cheaper and eaiser to pay someone to run your servers for you. Because (hopefully) they know what their doing. You don't have to know how to configure ipchains, your don't have to know file permessions etc...
Why do people use fast food when they can eaisly cook their own meals. Because they don't want to bother to turn on the stove....
Simple as that.

I agree. It's the convenience factor. Most people don't know how to or want to configure their own servers to host a site. Many would rather just pay a few $ per month to have somebody else take care of the site for them.

Its not really a case of wanting to, running a server takes a hell of a lot of time... about the only people how would do it is total computer freaks, that never go outside!
