I'm talking about the free basic billing system paypal uses

Do people usually look down on the web hosting site if they dont have their own billing system or can you get by with a new window being opened to the paypal website to finish them payment?

I wouldn't say people look down upon it, but it does provide a extra sliver of the professional look that you might be going for.

Everyone uses Paypal as a payment gateway, and you will always have to visit a part of paypal.com to complete the transaction.

The thing to remember is trying to hand manage a bunch of accounts without a decent billing system will create huge headaches in the future for you.

My reseller host offers a billing system for $5 a month. I actually am going to buy it when I get just a few more customers, but for now I guess, from your post, I'm fine. Thank you.

Sure, without your own payment merchant account it would be to a very select few a less than professional gateway but then again I use it for my hosting with whm auto pilot and it doesn't allow clients to even know for the most part.

for some clients, paypal is the only payment method they trust and is also used by many well known companies. As long as it is secure and intergrated professionally there should be no problem.

Think of it this way, if alot of businesses use web designed templates does that mean that because they didn't create the website by scratch that it is less professional? Truth be told, most web hosts use templates (even the most popular) and are still considered professional.

i guess i shouldn't of used the word professional, but used the word trustable.

What is a good alternative to paypal? I use paypal for selling hosting, but I sell ebooks and software by download and often get paypal chargebacks which is nothing more than theft by the person who bought them and then decided not to pay for them.

I use PayPal for my site, it works just fine. As mentioned, a built in system looks more professional, but not really necessary.

You could use ModernBill or WHMautoPilot. You can use PayPal to process the credit cards but these will manage the billing and give you a nicer interface. If you want a different payment processor then that will take more work, some of them are very selective of who they will allow to use their service.

alot of people are switching to google checkout because of the chargeback issue. Personally im not sure if they handel it diffrently or not but it seems to be a good alternative.

My suggestion is to put some spin on it and accentuate the positive aspects.

Such as:

To better protect your credit card details, we do not process the details directly. Instead we hand you over to paypal.com to complete your payment transaction.
