Those Vaio's are damn nice I agree. Looking at one for my next upgrade though. How reliable are they? I've had trouble with Sony lately. I figure I'm just getting the bad one in the bunch though.
This old Compaq hasn't skipped a beat in two years so I don't know what I'd do with a troubled child. :)

Tim Greer 03-04-2001, 10:54 PM I don't see a need for such excess for a home system. My opinion is, that it should run well enough to set up, run and test whatever you would run, set up or test on a web server. If your "program" or software you install or code isn't able to run well on a smaller system, you need to find a new line of work. :-)
It's great to have monster systems, but it just seems like a lot of money to spend and a waste of money, when it can be spent on better things. On my home network, I have a WinNT 4.0 server with the newest IIS, option pack, service pack, etc. I also run the Win32 versions of Apache, Perl, Python, Visual Studio, Tcl, MySQL, MsSQL, mSQL, PHP, etc., etc., etc. All the good stuff is usually free, but isn't the greatest on Win32. That's why my system is a 10 boot system (I actually don't recall how many right now) which consists on FreeBSD, various Linux brands (Slackware, Redhat, Debian, Caldera, SuSE) and whatever else I could fit onto my two drives, which includes WinNT.
I run all this on an AMD K6 266 MHZ CPU, with 64 Megs RAM, a Seagate 6.4 GIG (5 partitions) and a Western Digital 17.2 GIG (14 partitions). The drives are ATA 66 and the board is 66 BUS. I run 10/100 NIC's and a 10BaseT HUB on my network. This is my best system on my home network, unless I count my wife's Win98 Compaq system (which is considerably faster, but no more RAM than I have), and that's all I need. Personally, I refuse to run anything like Win2K that *requires* 128 Megs RAM. Sure, things are cheap, but if systems are getting faster and the software that runs on the systems require more resources, it comes out no better. I have tons of things on my WinNt server, as well as my Unix servers... and things run lightning fast. 3D rendering could be better with speed, but it's fast enough. I have no sound card, but who needs it? I mimic server environments, I have no need for things that are irrelevant to my job as a system administrator.
I figure, if I can't manage to configure things like services and software or programs I code on my current system without them needing more resources, with the small system I use, then I should find a new line of work. Anything beyond that, is a waste of money in my opinion, even though a faster system is always nicer. The other systems on my network are only P100 and P120 486's (with old 1 or 2 GIG drives, 10/100 NIC's, 16 to 32 or 40 Megs RAM) and a 33 MHZ 386 with 4 or 8 Megs RAM. These run Unix variants just fine. I figure if I can configure a stable, secure and fast system on these, imagine how much better they will be on a server. That might be a little over-kill, but it also ensures that I watch what I do and don't practice the bad style of many MS type employee's and just code slow programs and tell people they must have a system with a high amount of RAM and/or CPU to run it. People like that should be shot. Oh, and I have Pokemon stickers all over my tower's case. :-)

NEC MultiSync FE950 21" Monitor
:)
By the way ...thats just my main PC (favorite? :D). I have 5 other boxes running Slackware, Redhat, SuSe 6.3 & Win98SE ...and 3 laptops running Windows 98SE (2) and WinME (1) :stickout :D

256 MBs RAM
40GB SCSI HD
12x DVD-ROM
8x CD-RW
32MB TnT2
17" Sony Trinitron Monitor
Sound Blaster Live!
Altec Lansing Surround Sound w/Subwoofer
Graphire Wacom Tablet
This changes almost weekly, i'm always swapping parts around with another for whatever reason.
HP Pavilion, Pentium III 866, 160mb RAM, WinME, 30GB main drive, 10GB backup. HP CD-R, other CD, 19" monitor, UMAX Astra 2200 scanner, Epson 1270 photo printer, Altec Lansing Speaker system. Linksys cable/dsl router connected to Linux box running on an AMD k6/300 with 64mb's RAM, 2.1gb drive, Diamond Stealth 32mb video card, and an old 14" monitor.
I've been working in 3D programs a lot lately and they grind the computer to a crawl. I can see where Carlos spec's come into use, i've gotta work on this.

Mac OS X has caught my interest. I think Apple is heading in the correct direction. I might pick one up this year. :)
akashik 06-18-2001, 10:02 AM Update: (as my original post is too old to edit)
Packard Bell
800mhz Duron
128 meg RAM
40 gig hard drive
Hercules Prophet 3d mx (64 meg)
Hauppage Win TV card
plus all the peripherals from the laptop post. The lil laptop is being giving to my better half as her old 200mhz desktop finally fried itself last week.
FYI - anyone looking at a 3d card at the moment, check out the Hercules cards. Very affordable and amazing quality for the price. :)

They did use a fair bit of BSD code. Can't go wrong with BSD code! (Okay, W2K also uses BSD code...). There was an article on CNET a little while ago on OS X vs. W2K. OS X won. Freaky.
