Which is the better choice?

With meta refreshing a page of an old domain to that of a new domain are search engine referrals affected greatly? Does meta refresh allow you to keep search engine position at all or is it the same as just using domain forwarding where you lose all search engine positioning on an old domain after the spiders revist it? I am curious about this with several small traffic domains I am working with.
