hans_20 02-25-2001, 07:51 PM I Want to order a raq3
i have about 25,000 visitors a day
i am using the extions .shtml and a bulletion board such as vbulletin
how much memory do i need
32 or 64 or 128, let me now it, thank you...
-Edward- 02-25-2001, 07:53 PM 128 as a minimum for a site like that ... you'll prolly at somepoint need to get 256 bu 128 should be fine to start with.
hans_20 02-25-2001, 07:55 PM Why do i need so much to start ???
-Edward- 02-25-2001, 07:56 PM go with any less and your server will be at a virtual crawl and your visitors wont return.
I have a vsite who gets about 40k "hits" a day according to webalizer. He's using SSI as well as a cgi board. Everything is okay as far as the server goes. I also have another vsite with UBB and I have a vBulletin/Ikonboard myself. I also have pump about 2 gb a day of traffic. It looks like my 64 megs is doing quite well!

how much extra do you need to pay anyway? 25000 hits a day is a lot! I do really think you need at last 128MB...
just my 2 cents, though
cheers,

BTW if you have to go with RAQ, try to get RAQ4; it is much better than RAQ3 (it also comes with ChiliSoft ASP installed, I believe). Also, try http://www.rackshack.net. They have pretty good deal on RAQ4, only for $99/mo you will get 128MB, 20GB HD, and 100GB of transfer... unbeliveable deal! Don't know about the company though...
cheers,

The only difference between the RAQ3 and RAQ4i I can tell is a control panel with one or two nice additions. A 450Mhz processor compared to a 300Mhz (which is in the RAQ3) has caused us no real problems. We have both a RAQ3 and RAQ4.
If you can get a good deal on a RAQ3 as opposed to a RAQ4 then I'd definitely take the RAQ3 if I were you. 4webspace have a decent trackrecord on their $99/month 100GB transfer RAQ3 offer.

then you should learn your system more closely. Does Raq3 offer a chilisoft ASP? Is there any Raq4 offered with only 32 MB of memory? What is the minimum HD size on Raq4?

Beside 4webspace's reputation, why would I want to get Raq3 for $99/mo if I can get a better (you are the first person I have ever known to say they are the same! Gee...) RAQ4 for the same price?
cheers,

Where did you get the same offer from 4WS (RaQ4&100GB,$199,cheap IP's) for half the price?
dektong 02-26-2001, 11:56 PM http://www.rackshack.net ... sorry I just realized my previous went to a totally different site... what a difference 3 letters can make :D
cheers,

c0bra 02-27-2001, 02:16 AM then you should learn your system more closely. Does Raq3 offer a chilisoft ASP?
No but we've never used ASP once on our RAQ4.

Who cares? RAM is easily upgradeable. Ours RAQ3 was upgraded to 128MB for a onetime fee of around $100.

Speaking as someone who has been through his fair share of troubles with these "bargain basement" deal providers, I say reputation to deliver a quality service should rank high on anyones list when choosing where to rent a server from.
Who cares if you have a slightly higher spec machine with the wonders of ASP support if its constantly unreachable due to network problems? 4webspace have been delivering a top service for many months now, if rackshack prove capable of doing the same then of course they offer a very attractively priced package. But until they prove themselves, I'll stand by my own view.

These do not make Raq3=Raq4, don't they? No one will argue (except you) that Raq4 is better than Raq3.

have you found anybody compalining about rackshack.net? No one that I know of.

has not heard about rackshack.net having network problem! But, I have heard a lot of complaints about 4webspace.com, especially regarding their network being down too often. Just search this forum!

well, good for you! I am just giving alternative to people and suddenly you jumped out makind a hillarious comment about Raq3 being the same as Raq4!
cheers,

Where have I argued a RAQ3 is better than RAQ4? I just stated there is very little difference (IMO) between the two models.

I've heard very little of them so far.

Again, I've not heard much of rackshack.net or their dedicated server offerings. So I think it's a little too early to make sweeping comparisons between 4webspace and rackshack.
well, good for you! I am just giving alternative to people and suddenly you jumped out makind a hillarious comment about Raq3 being the same as Raq4!
So now I'm saying it's the same? Just a few moments ago you claimed I said a RAQ3 was better than a RAQ4. When in fact I said neither.
"The only difference between the RAQ3 and RAQ4i I can tell is a control panel with one or two nice additions."
The one or two nice additions being a *slightly* faster processor and a bigger hard drive. My point was, performance wise you'll be hard pushed to tell the difference between the two.
c0bra 02-27-2001, 02:57 AM Another thing you failed to mention about this "unbelievable deal" was the $250 onetime setup fee rackshack charges on their $99/monthly package.
dektong 02-27-2001, 03:04 AM Well whatever, I won't continue this. I am just giving a possible better choice. yes, there is $250 setup fee. But how much do other charges for Raq4 monthly?. Besides, how much does it cost 4webspace to add PHP and Chilisoft ASP to a Raq3? additional $874. You get all these free with Raq4! You may not need this features, I don't care. Somebody else will probably need it. I did not start answering the original question for your purpose! If you want to check my post, I have already given rackshack.net a detail comparison on previous thread, pros and cons!
I am not ascociated with rackshack.net nor I will get any benefit (even $0.01) by telling people to take a look at their site. You seem to have problem with me giving people an alternative site to look. Fine... I don't care. What do I have to gain? What do I have to lose? None!
cheers,

Back to your original question... Don't be affraid of losing money... since there are so many options on the net which is probably still is better than the deal you are orinally considering. I mention rackshack.net since they have $99/mo deal, though with expensive setup (but you will get PHP and Chilisoft ASP for free anyway! something to consider if you decide to go with Raq3).
Why would you want to get Raq3 with 32MB if you can get Raq4 with 128MB for the same money, bigger HD, and better processor? (forget about Chilisoft ASP).
Rackshack.net may serve your purpose, but you may want to contact them since I have never used them before. I talked to their sales, ask few questions and it was a pleasant experience...
Note: I am not affiliated in any way with rackshack.net; I am not even gain one single cent by referring people to their sites! All I am saying is that there may be a better raq for your budget. Hope you will take my advice and have a look.
cheers,

I thought you were our resident RAQ4 expert? PHP and Chillsoft ASP are pre-installed on the RAQ4s, rackshack are installing nothing for free.
Why would you want to get Raq3 with 32MB if you can get Raq4 with 128MB for the same money, bigger HD, and better processor? (forget about Chilisoft ASP).
When you pay their setup fee, you could have upgraded the RAQ3 to 128MB and still have around $150 left to play with.
Now if you specifically need or want Chillsoft ASP then yes the RAQ4 is unquestionably the way to go. If not, then I wouldn't totally discount the RAQ3 as a viable solution.

Have I said that before? I was looking at the wrong page at 4webspace.com, was wondering why in the heck do they charge for Chilosoft ASP and PHP. But it was for Raq3. So yes, I made mistake. I will edit the posts.

Well, why would I want to pay that much for a Raq3? Forget about PHP and ChilisoftASP!

If not, still Raq4 at $99/mo worths considering, eventhough with such a big setup fee!

hans_20,
To answer your question previous to this thread going insane, I think you'll find 128meg a very good start for the traffic your site is pulling. If they were all static html pages you could get away with a lot less, but forums are highly dynamic scripts that get a serious pounding from users. If people look at a static page they'll read it once or twice and move on. A forum is constantly updating with new posts, all of which get built on the fly by the script itself, drawing from the database and setting it so people can read it. Therefore the more 'grunt' the server has to work with the better forum will work. If you skimp on the RAM, you pipes won't matter too much as the site will hit a serious slowdown before it even gets out of the machine.
