I have a web site and it is hosted with UK2.net who use RaQ3 servers. I am a newbie when it comes to web design, but i do understand the importance of a 404 message that will link back to the home page i have been on the web and got the instructions to do it and im pretty confident. However, i created the .htaccess file on my computer through Dreamweaver 4 but i can't upload it. I have tried using the dreamweaver 'site' upload facility and CuteFTP but i still get the message that i dont have permission to do it. I have also tried uploading the file and then changing the name with CuteFTP but that was a no go as well.

I would appreciate a bit of help here guys. Please don't reply with a load of techtalk because i won't understand a word of it. :-)

Thanks.

Hi, try this:

Make a .htaccess file in notepad and add the ff: line

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomainname.com/404page.html

(note: the 404page.html is the name of your 404 error page)

make sure to save it as .HTACCESS without any other extensions. and upload in ascii , thats it :)

hope that helps.

Hmmmn sounds like .htaccess is not allowed in your server ?

are you on a dedicated machine or virtual ?

Ellmb,

Out of curiosity, when logging in can you upload ANYTHING? What I mean is, after you get that error of permission denied for uploading a .htaccess file, can you upload a regular file? Like something like test.html?

Yes no problem there.

Sounds to me as though you are not set up as a server or site admin.

Ask your host.
