Hi,
I am considering a raq (3 or 4) or a unix dedicated. I have about 100 names and the price of virtual hosting has reached a point where I might as well make the plunge. However, I am a little concerned about the postings I read at a couple sites concerning updating the software on the raq servers.
For those who currently have a raq or have used it in the past, could you provide a brief overview of the issues involved in using this machine in copmarison with regular virtual hosting?
Many thanks in advance for your time,
larry

Hi IMHO dont get a raq bec., they have amd processors in 300mhz and 450mhz, if your sites are static html sites then a raq is ok, but if you have database driven sites then its not recommended.
Seriously though, get a real linux box. We have 2 raq's 3 and 4 and all i can say is, its a very good first machine but after a few weeks of playing with it and notice all the shortcomings of raqs , you'll wish you bought a real linux box, so I bought a RH6.2 linux box this time and all i can say is im a happy :) guy :P.
When updating the raq software it is i think one of the easiest to update compared to other os's like red hat or freebsd. one thing to remeber tho is that when cobalt posts, update/patches make sure to wait for a week or 2 before installing the updates.

So I guess it would be difficult to sell you my spare RaQ3 after that, eh? :)
Really, if you just want to get out of being a reseller and move up a notch, the RaQs are a decent starting point. Quirky sometimes, but easy to use, with a decent network of people (users that is) to help you out if you ever get into trouble.
You have that with other boxes as well, so no matter which you decide, help is here and elsewhere if you'd need it. I will say however that its ease of use is the drawback as well. Certain things it likes to do its way. Understandable really- they are made to do a certain thing, and they do it reasonably well.
I'm not sure of the figure, but I'd say that after you filled the RaQ with sites and needed to get another server, you'll probably look to other options, not that that's an easy task at all. (I guess you could say that at least with a RaQ, you kinda know what you are getting into, etc.) :)

Two weeks? You're a generous person Elijah :)
