I think the "showcase" section on hostsearch seams very good. 350$ for one month, that`s not bad considering the pricing on banner adds on the front page. Has anyone any experience with advertising there?

Well, probably good if you have plans that's $9.95 or even as low as $1.00. This kind of worries me since I'm planning start up a hosting company and my lowest plan starts at $19.95.

Even if your plans start to $20 a month, if they have a strong feature set that is comparable to others in the same range it won't matter too much. If you have value added plans, even better.
Hosts who advertise a price in their banners do so due to it being only $1-7. It's a hook, but not one everyone needs to employ. If price isn't a strong feature for advertising, just don't mention it. If database, or diskspace is, then mention that in a little flashing button instead.
Advertising isn't about dishonesty as people will find out soon enough if you're offering something you don't have, but it is about featuring your strong points.
A good way to start to to look for directories to add your site too in general. Once you have them all covered then look at paid ads. You'll probably notice a few directory sites sending you traffic soon after adding your name to them, so they would be a good place to start regarding a paid ad. We get traffic from some odd places, and almost none from others we though would be an easy pick. Naturally if you have other websites that generate traffic they are a free option as well.

Oh I almost forgot. Some people won't pay less then $20-30 a month for hosting as they feel they will be getting a better level of service for the money. Whether this is a correct assumption or not, you could look at appealing to those customers alone by promoting a rock solid, reliable service with great support, rather than the best deals on the net.

Virtualis (http://www.virtualis.com) has "Shared Hosting Packages starting as low as $36/month," and their top-level shared hosting plan is $176/month!

The best way to promote a webhost is to get at least one high quality content site as a client. Showcase this client. I know when I first looked at hosts I wanted to make sure the host at least hosted one popular site. Because I figure if its good enough for a site I know then the host must be good enough for me.

Chris,
Yes exactly. Also Verio has some pretty nasty rates for hosting too. If they can get people in the door then that proves some people are willing to pay a lot for hosting. Of course it helps to actually *be* Verio and the others to charge that... :)
