At first I was just going to ask about your favourite coffee brands/blends, because I need to get off of this instant stuff. I decided that it'd be more interesting to see the most popular source of caffeine though.

Vanilla Coke is soo good! I'm a cherry pepsi or cream soda fan but just about any type of beer gets me quenched as well. ;)

Now this I can talk intelligently about for my first post

It's gotta be real coffee, and where I live Starbucks doesn't cut it. I've gotten spoiled at work, we get our coffee from a place called "Brewed Awakenings". It has a blend called Sardgena that's the best dark brew around.

I don't drink much caffeine. I drink something with caffeine maybe twice a week.

Then again, I'm with child, so I have to keep my caffeine consumption to a min.

My only source = Mountain Dew. Just opened a can while reading this thread.

Vanilla Coke? Tried it once and couldn't taste the vanilla. Thought that should have been evident based on the name...

I make coffee the way my dad made it in the army.. 1 quart of water (cold) 1 1/2 cups coffee.. Bring to a simmer.. Strain coffee grounds through cheesecloth, reserve for later.. drink or rather, spoon coffee sludge into mouth..

Get yourself either a plain drip or french press. Or if you must buy an automatic (I do use one), get one that is known to heat the water hot enough. Many do not. I have a KitchenAid which is known for hot water.

1 grinder. Do not buy preground if you can avoid it.

Keep your beans in a sealed jar, or if the shop has resealable plastic bags with an air vent, use those. They can be recycled over and over.

Don't buy too much. I buy beans every other Saturday, 2 lbs at a time to get a deal. I would not want to keep the beans around much longer than that as they do go off in time.

Make sure you buy good quality beans. In Canada 2lbs of good beans cost about 22$. This makes 1 or 2 pots of coffee every day for more than two weeks, I consider it cheap, especially if you compare the cost of buying a cup of marginal coffee from a vendor every day!

If you like a nice rich coffee, I suggest Guatemalan or a blend that is heavy on Guatemalan (Huehuetenango !). Good middle of the road, full flavour, not big on bitter but big on flavour. Coming off of instant you have such a wide variety of coffee styles and flavours to experiement with, you may as well have some fun in the experimentation.

I don't like Starbucks beans as much as other locally roasted smaller shops. I find they roast too dark. And the place I buy from does big turnover and I know I am always getting very freshly roasted beans. And the women behind the counter are good looking too. I digress.

Experiment. Tell the shop folks what you like and have them suggest something. Maybe you need to try three or four general styles - light and acidic through to heavy and earthy - somewhere in the range you will find something you like and can fine tune from there.

Grind, but do not over grind. Eventually you will find an amount of whole beans and a grinding time that works for you and the amount of coffee. We make the coffee the same way every morning and have extremely consistant results, even when half asleep.

Brew. If pouring hot water from a kettle let it come just off the boil, wet the grounds and let it sit for a second, and then fill the filter up, pause, fill as required. If using an automatic, sit on the floor in a stupor until it is complete.

Grab a nice hefty mug, fill and enjoy. In the winter, rinse it out with hot water if its cold, before filling of course!

Man, I need to brew a pot now.

Ps, I used to drink far more coffee than is good for a human. When some kind soul turned me on to very good coffee, I found that having a very satisfying cup in the morning was enough for me. Some afternoons and even in the evening I might have another - but at least I'm not drinking 8 cups a day of marginal coffee. Just a few well placed, very enjoyable cuppas...

ps, drink water the rest of the time. Your body will thank you for it.

My future sister-in-law gave me a Coffee press for christmas, it does indeed make an excellent cup of coffee.. 18 years of dad's coffee sludge though has more than rendered my coffee palate inoperable.

I generally only have two cups a day, but man they are POTENT cups :)

I agree ... the french press is the way to go. If you guys really want the best in coffee, try roasting your own beans. You can even do it in a frying pan on your stove.

Don't you live in Vancouver? I think I'd switch to the green stuff first. Off topic ... a friend of mine was riding the North Shore a few weekends ago, someone broke into his car and stole everything while he was parked downtown. I thought crime was lite there? I guess the pot thing has screwed things up a bit.

mwatkins
07-29-2002, 02:48 PM
Yes, I live here in Vancouver. I might try the green stuff just as an experiment. Who knows.

B&E of a car? Happens all too often. The key is to leave nothing inside of value. I learned that the hard way once upon a time. But now I drive a family wagon and no one breaks in lest they discover some bag of diapers or some such thing!

Crime is pretty light here - there are very few areas of town that I would not venture into late at night. Actually, the one that I am thinking about I did venture into last week, but I'm not a small guy and was riding my bike, probably looked more like a cop anyway.

Vancouver has a warm climate and is attractive to the adict community - a big port, lots of drugs, and you don't freeze here in the winter like you might in Toronto. So petty theft in some parts of town can be a problem.

I am not a decriminalization fan myself, allowing people to legally carry pot or carry it without the threat of being charged just makes the market that much bigger and the potential profits for organized crime even larger. That doesn't seem like a good solution to me.

<edit> Actually, I misread your statement. There isn't a good solution, I agree. Criminalization tends to create the same problem. Tricky stuff, I'll stick to gourmet coffee. :D
