Solid business plan and little extras with technical support?

I honestly couldn't tell you without comparing to specific hosts. There's really no such thing as a "standard" host to compare from, everyone here has goals for there business and lifestyle and some manage to achieve it though years of hard work and dedication to their clients - just like any business.

4 oc12's, 1 gigabit pipe, and a baby oc3 .... :-)

UUnet, AT&T, Global Crossing, Sprint = 4 x 622 megs
Level 3 = 1 x 1000 megs
Qwest = 1 x 155 megs....

3.243 gigabits of bandwidth...

Ok - 1.6 gigs is in use, but that still leaves 50% left over. :-)

Well,
We do not advertise or market on WHT forum? I'm sure that is kind of unique :)

Sounds like Dick's Last Resort in Dallas.

As far as what sets us apart from other hosting companies...well, there is my status as the best looking webhost in the world. Oh yeah, I'm modest, too.:)

GM Steakhouse in Austin, Texas used to have the same schtick. I was dining there one night when a guy came in and ordered a hamburger. He didn't know the routine. They started giving him a hard time about how they had just cleaned the grill. There might have even been some profanity. He got upset and said "F*** you" and stormed out.

Some hosts don't want to open up their site to the community and suffer the consequences thereof. :D :stickout

Seriously, it swings both ways for hosts. If a host decides to be anonymous here, they aren't accountable to the community. But they miss out on any business that might pass their way. Then again if their client base is from outside of WHT, when they have problems, not many folks hear about it.

There's no right and wrong here. I  when I see hosts standing on the high moral ground proclaiming proudly that they're anonymous and don't "mine" WHT. It just might be that they're afraid to release their business to the broader hosting community. Probably not, but still therein lies a possibility worth considering... :D

True, so true. I get almost no new business from WHT - even though I've been hanging out and posting here for 1.5 years or so. Why? Because we don't give away our services at rediculous prices. You won't get anything from us for $3. The cheapest we offer is $5, and its a _small_ plan.

I know for a fact that I cannot offer good service if all my customers payed me less than $5 per month. Perhaps if I only have a hundred or so, but once you started getting more and more, you have to hire someone to help.

Who am I going to hire to do systems admin work for minimum wage? Would you want to have your web site run by someone who works for so little - and probably knows even less? No.

I won't do that to my customers, and I won't have myself associated with a business that runs that way.

Maybe that is what makes us "different" in the web hosting industry. Not to say that other hosts don't operate the same way, but I definitely don't think its the majority.

Take care,

Brian

What separates us? This would be our unique approach with the presentation of our site. We're a community built around a service more than a hosting provider. I am not aware of any host that uses this concept. Therefore, we are separated from the noisy pack of "me too" hosts. :)

I think the only way to compete is to be a niche player - service the heck out of your local market, provide some value-added service to a particular user group (eg, gamers, etc.)
