Boy, I'd sure like to get this FrontPage problem worked out once and for all. I got my first FrontPage-using customer, and he is trying to publish his site up to my server, but he is running into errors (see attachment for screenshot).

In Plesk, I have FrontPage checked off, I have Authorization Enabled, and if I FTP into his site I can see that all the FP default directories are set up. In Plesk, I also set up a FP login and password for him.

He emailed me tonight with:

I wasn't able to publish from Frontpage this evening. I got a message that suggested that the server might not be setup for Frontpage. I have attached a copy of the message for your reference.
I think the problem might be that I am not putting the correct
information into the Frontpage publishing popup. I have included this in the attachment also.
Where should I be trying to publish the site to. I tried several of the suggestions in your message but nothing worked.
The next screen I should see is a place to put my account ID and
password, but I didn't get that far.
What do you suggest?

Can anyone tell me what I should suggest to this customer?

Thanks.

there may be a version difference with your FP server extensions and the FP he is using

also log into the server through ssh and type

apachectl -l to see if frontpage.c is compiled with apache. [it will list frontpage.c among others]

hope this helps

Hmm. When I login through ssh and type in apachectl -l, it says:

bash: apachectl: command not found

Is there another command I could/should use?
Is doing this in ssh just to confirm that FP is in fact set up on the server, or am I looking for other info?
How will I know if it is a version conflict? And if it is, what do I do to fix the problem?

Thanks for your help.

I found the apachectl (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/programs/apachectl.html) reference, but it's over my head.

Surely Vito, your host should be able to help you out here

Thanks Lats:
Funny, I was reading that same exact page on Apache.org before you posted. Didn't help me either...

YEs, well, I'm not sure what to make of this. When I signed up with them back in early March, their support was stellar...up to about a month ago. Now, getting a reply is like pulling teeth. And this is not a johnny-come-lately host that just started 6 months ago either. Boggles the mind.

Sadly, it looks like I'll have to look for another host yet again . But in the meantime, I have to solve my customer's problem.

Shame about your host, I found this (http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/) in the meantime - looks promising.

Good luck.

vito,

Sorry I didn't see this post all the while

Yes.. apachectl is just to check if your Apache has FP enabled.

I really am sorry I dont know the answer to your question

Hmm. Although I can't seem to be able to use that command in ssh, I have to assume that FP is loaded on the server. After all, on my host's site FP is listed as an included feature on all accounts. And besides that, it an active option in the account setup in Plesk.

If I could only get this #@!&*#/ host to reply to my support request!

I can't stand mediocrity and unreliable business partners.

Hi vito,

I have a FAQ page that also deals with FP problems, none of my clients uses FP to publish their site.

Anyways, I myself don't use FP, if it's of any help, have a look at www.boomhost.com/faq.htm

Hope this helps

Thanks, Cactus. I will provide that information to my customer. It's sure to help.

When I think about it, having to go in ssh to see that FP is installed is unnecessary. After all, if I ftp to the customer's site, I can see all the FP directories set up. So that can't be it.

One thing made me wonder. I read (I forget where) that the webmaster has to use the same login and password in FP that he would use when normally FTPing to his site. But when I originally set up the account in Plesk, at one point, it asked me to create a login/password for FTP. Fine, that's what I do for all new accounts. But then when I specified I want FP installed, it asked me to create a login/password for FP. So I created a different login/password for FP.

Could this be the problem? Does the FP login/password have to match the FTP one? If so, I don't see in Plesk where you can change the FP login/password. So maybe I have to delete the entire account and re-create it?

Man, my head hurts with this one. I wish I could just solve it...

Sorry vito, I am using WHM/CPanel for my clients.

I think it's something to do with the login username/password that may have to be enable in Plesk, hope someone having experienced it will help out.
