I always fear this and then you have to tell your clients and then they want refunds and you dont have or dont want to give refund because its not your fault.

Best luck man!

At the end of the day it is your fault that you got hacked im not saying this to sound mean or anything but your server should of been hardenned by a server professional, it should of had at least a 10 lettered, numbered password to decrease the chance on someone guessing it and all unused ports should of been firewalled off and all services should of had a unique password set to them.

thats my advice

PS

Im not saying by doing this it will be hacker proof but it will make it a lot damn hard for them to hack it

5 years in business, never been hacked. :)

Well at least not up to the root level. Some of my accounts used to get hacked due to vulnerable scripts etc, but they couldn't do much wrong.

Always used Linux.

None of our Linux and Windows servers ever got hacked. But we also make backup's to a remote server, just to be safe. So in case something does happen with our clients data, we always have our backups. Basically i think backup's are the best way to not disappoint your clients.

RAID would also be nice. In combination with external back-ups off course.

Raid is nice for a failing hard drive, but it won't safe you from a hack attack or for instance, a failing power supply that takes out all the hard drives (rare but you never know ;))
External back-up's are always the most secure for your data.
