View Full Version : help for a newbie
stretch69 08-16-2007, 01:36 PM I am completely new at this...I bought a domain name and purchased software called webtonight from godaddy. I'm trying to find a way to put music in the background of my page. Also I'm trying to find a way to put navigation buttons in my content blocks. There is no way to do this with their software but when I emailed and asked for support they told me to do a google search for answers. Can anyone help me PLEASE???

jerett 08-16-2007, 02:04 PM I would suggest looking into Joomla. Its a free program that has the a plugin directory that I believe has what your looking for. Do some research at Joomla.com.
Sublima Star 08-16-2007, 02:34 PM If you are using Windows Office the you can aesy make webpages in Microsoft FrontPage or even in MS Word
stretch69 08-16-2007, 02:47 PM I can add music to the background and navigation buttons in content blocks on a webpage that already exists?
nwaservers 08-18-2007, 12:13 AM I would suggest looking at a wysiwyg editor (NVU) is a free one.
erickp 08-20-2007, 09:11 PM Give "RapidWeaver" a shot. Not that expensive and you can give the trail version a whirl. I know you would like the easiest way but you might want to put a little effort into getting familiar with HTML. Even just a little. It might make things easier in the future. Plus you can brag to your friends at the tailgate parties that you know HTML. ;-)
E-Visionz 08-21-2007, 07:41 AM The editor I use, Adobe (formerly Macromedia) Dreamweaver, maybe looks complicated, but is exactly what you need. It is far more easier to use than FrontPage, but has the same abilities.
I suggest you download the trail version from the Adobe site...
daveredfern 08-21-2007, 11:13 AM check out www.opensourcecms.com or if you want to go even easier you can sign up to something like www.wordpress.com or www.freewebs.com and make a site there. you would then have to direct the domain to their address through the forwarding options.
It is best if you do look into html, it is pretty simple to get your head round and after a day or two you will be able to competently edit pages using it.
most sites now run on a content manage system which basically means you edit sites through the browser in an admin interface and you should definitely look at this for ease.
i wouldn't recommend joomla or drupal at this stage as they might be a little complex but there are simpler ones such as lucidcms and cmsmadeeasy (unsure of the site urls so you will have to google them).
dave,
songlot 08-22-2007, 10:42 PM I suggest you search some online website makers. For beginners, that's the easier way to get started. Put music is easy in local machine but need to upload the full dir through FTP or web page. Online one usually use a rich editor like MS word and you can upload online and insert the media file to the webpage.
I'll have to go against the grain and recommend you don't use any music at all. Unless of course you're creating a purely artistic site. Music doesn't add anything to the web page but frustration in my experience.
But hey, it's your web page, have fun :)
KentonNetworks 08-23-2007, 02:20 AM Hello,
I second that on you trying "RapidWeaver", its easy and doesn't use much of technical stuff.
I would also stress to leave all CMS out of this (Joomal, Wordpress, etc..) as this will just make things complicated for you.
If you want an easy start, no CMS and give "RapidWeaver" a try. :)
HighVoltage123 08-24-2007, 06:45 AM don't forget to put a "stop" button - there are people that don't like that
If you are using Windows Office the you can aesy make webpages in Microsoft FrontPage or even in MS Word
While it may be relatively easy to do in Word, it writes some of the worst code I've ever seen. Best to avoid if possible. Frontpage is only marginally better, I feel.
As for Rapidweaver?
RapidWeaver is a WYSIWYG template-based website creation tool exclusive to Mac OS X.
Might be a bit of a drawback if he's using a PC. ;)
NVU is a decent editor, and best of all, free.
Mxhub 08-24-2007, 07:49 AM Time to move on to microsoft expression. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/
Better than frontpage and words, imo.
However, i would recommend dreamweaver if you can afford it.
As what bear suggest, NVU is another excellent editor . Best is it is free. :)
Michelle123 09-25-2007, 10:35 AM Try HomeTeamsOnline.com. They have great looking sites and they are very easy to use. I've setup 2 baseball teams with them and they have worked just fine.
