Sounds about right. I was quoted $3600/month for 1mbit from PowerTel. :bawling: It's all Telstra's fault.

All their reasonably priced plans are actually hosted in the US or Canada. :(

hehe, I meant to contact Gary regarding hosts... he gave me good advice about aussie co-lo's - I didn't mean that they provided cheap dedicateds within oz - Perhaps they do, perhaps they don't. The thread tells the story, NZ bandwidth is ridiculously priced too - Great for hosting normal sites, you just can't get the amounts at the prices that are common within the states.
The per GB charge within NZ is around $NZ20 per GB.....
1 MBPS (Business Grade bandwidth) = NZ$3200/mth
1 MBPS (Carrier Grade) = NZ$9000/mth
These are pretty much the asking rates of ISP's - There are deals to be done but it's still going to cost you lots a dollars.
(You need the more expensive option to host servers)
It aint too cheap lol :D
:: paVel :: 07-26-2002, 04:35 AM so.... i better get Hosting in US?:confused: :eek:

Only about 10x the price of US-based hosting. Which tends to indicate that they haven't found cheap bandwidth in Australia either. :unhappy:
Internet in Australia is :puke:
This is a real pain. I've been looking at getting a dedicated server (I'm currently at ez-web-hosting). US-based servers are cheap, but ping times are terrible, simply because of the distance. Australian servers give good ping, but are horribly expensive: bandwidth in Australia costs 10 to 100 times as much as it does in the US. Even though we now have the Southern Cross Cable, which gives us a huge pipe to the rest of the world, bandwidth is still horrbily expensive. For example, if I go over the 2.5GB cap on my ADSL, I pay A$149 (about US$80) per GB. And that's cheap - Telstra charge twice that! (My provider does give me "unlimited" off-peak downloads, which is why I chose them. Unfortunately, "unlimited" means 10GB.)
If anyone can provide cheap bandwidth in Australia, they'll find themselves with more customers than they know what to do with. :) Not holding my breath though.
StevenG 07-26-2002, 04:41 AM Anyone have thoughts on these guys?

I've seen this site before; the only relevant price I could find is for the "Stop Press 1 Only" offer for a Cobalt Raq at $199 per month. (That 1 Only Raq has been there for a couple of months at least.)
Don't like companies that make me hunt down their pricing. It's rarely worth the time.
By the way, I'd kill (or at least inflict minor injuries) to get bandwidth at NZ$20/GB here in Oz. Telstra must die!
StevenG 07-26-2002, 05:06 AM Telstra must die!
Telstra are raising their ugly head here too.... not a good sign by the sounds of it..... I see Cogent communications vehicles running aroung the place - Have a feeling that pricing may be starting to lower over here - Time will tell :D
OzyWebHost 07-26-2002, 05:06 AM No argument from me PixyMisa [and I thought naming racehorses was hard:D ] Telstra sux [New Zealand NIL:rolleyes: ]
Who really cares where you are located on the globe nowadays???
edude 07-26-2002, 05:09 AM Really cogent co is in NZ? btw new zealand telecom = telstra?
StevenG 07-26-2002, 05:11 AM Who really cares where you are located on the globe nowadays???
Some people do care, others don't.
No big deal but it can be handy if you are able access your machine just down the road instead of trying to contact someone in the US in the early hours :D
StevenG 07-26-2002, 05:15 AM Yeah, Telstra/Saturn - Telecom all expensive - Monopolies.
(I really meant that Telstra seem to be buying everything that they can - Monopolising)
http://www.cogentcommunications.co.nz/ :D
(There site was just really slow for me though lol - Ha, hope it's just a temp glitch :D )
OzyWebHost 07-26-2002, 05:25 AM *Agrees with Steve;) * although I expected a bite over another comment I made:D [Joking]
PixyMisa 07-26-2002, 05:26 AM I couldn't get to Cogent's NZ site at all. So I dropped in on their US site. 100Mbit for $1000 per month. Now I'm upset.
StevenG 07-26-2002, 05:30 AM *Agrees with Steve * although I expected a bite over another comment I made [Joking]
hehe, I *nearly did* Sorry :D - No bites on a Friday lol :D
Take it easy :D

Couldn't find any info on Google, and I highly doubt it anyway. I've been keeping my eye on these people (http://www.nextgennetworks.com.au) though. ;)

No. Choices here are very limited. Places like davnet, primus, globalcenter are pretty much your only choices - oh and telstra and useless ... errr i mean optus of course.
reseller 07-26-2002, 10:02 AM Actually I think you can scratch Davnet off that list, I'm reasonably sure they stopped their net connectivity through lack of funds and the over-riding restrictions we have in place here.
Senator Richard Alston needs to have some computer lessons I think.
*edited for typos*
citrus 07-26-2002, 10:08 AM It was a joke; cogent isn't available in AU...:cartman:
edude 07-26-2002, 10:18 AM I work for Froggy ISP most aussies would know them, we are in talks with several providers, PSInet, Sprint, XYZed so the market is full of providers, but no one can come in with the right pricing..
Sprint said 1c per mb..
reseller 07-26-2002, 10:26 AM I thought froggy went out of business? Didn't the guy that owns it pull a huge scam and go bankrupt?
edude 07-26-2002, 10:38 AM Nope, Froggy was bought out by Blue JOY PTY LTD. The company i came along with, we now have over 35,000 customers :)
Karl Suleman was the previous owner, yes he ran a pyramid scheme.
seg fault 07-26-2002, 10:54 AM Yes its true - Sprint are starting to move into the australian market charging around $1100 AUD for all you can eat. (1mbps)
The reason our bandwidth is so expensive (or one of) is that our land mass is so great whereas our population is very concentrated toward the coasts.
And the East coast to west coast is a very long way.
It is unlikely our bandwidth will ever be matched to that of the USA.
reseller 07-26-2002, 11:06 AM Unless we get ultra fast and ultra cheap satellite, or microwave or soemthing along those lines.
that would be nice :) i can dream right?
edude 07-26-2002, 11:44 AM You guys heard of PSInet?
reseller 07-26-2002, 11:48 AM yep heard of them a long time ago, haven't looked at them for a while though.
reseller 07-26-2002, 11:49 AM cogent has bought PSInet out, so I guess Cogent is technically in Australia now afterall
edude 07-26-2002, 11:51 AM Really? cogent owns psinet? WOW
Just had a meeting with them today, their pricing isn't really that good..
But they said they would get back to us..

well i think they only bought PSInet America ... atleast the European ones are still operating independent.
dunno about the australian one, though.
edude 07-28-2002, 08:31 AM Thats right, but we are working on a adsl product, with sprint being one of the overseas carriers, we just have to get our tail setup ;) (local loop)

That would still be dependant on leasing space through Telstra's phone lines though right?
One day they will upgrade my local exchange to handle ADSl connections, but then again they said one day they will install cable throughout the area I live in, then they said they were no longer installing any new cable connections, so I'm not holding my breath for ADSL. Would be nice to have though *sigh*
edude 07-28-2002, 09:30 AM Nope not phone lines, but we would have to use their core switches etc.. basically we don't use much of Telstra, we will be using Broadband DSL Layer 2 technology, or hope to.
StevenG 07-28-2002, 09:46 AM Sorry Reseller...... Hope broadband comes your way real soon... :D

Wow so froggy really want to be a serious player huh? They will need to shake off the stigma of the former owner though. Should be interesting to watch :)
Ozemail have recently put their toe into the broadband bigpond...oops i mean water ;) , not sure what will happen to them now that worldcom have gone under. Although thinking about it, someone will buy Ozemail so I guess they will just keep on growing.

Yeah, not holding my breath though. Full broadband set up here is far too slow. By the time they do it it will be out-dated and we'll all be jacking into the net through neural connections or something. How many GB's do you think the brain holds?
edude 07-28-2002, 11:33 AM Yep, thats the hard part, the former owner left froggy with a very bad reputation.. people still refer to froggy as "gone bankrupt", "no more" etc..
Also yep, with adsl very serious since our customer base keeps requesting adsl services..
Also in Australia is narrowband :)

PHP50 07-29-2002, 02:57 AM All i know, is that bigpond is a great ISP, but they charge a hell of a lot of money for it (it's great knowing someone working for telstra, way cheaper ;)). Anyways if all these communication companys in the US came over to Australia with their prices, they would make some more money, even if they charged 5 times more, they would still get lots of customers. I sometimes wonder if it would be worth them rolling out all that cable though.
edude 07-29-2002, 03:18 AM Yep nothing special about bigpond - many isp's offer the same service now for a cheaper price using Telstra's megapop setup.
AussieHosts 07-29-2002, 04:12 AM We're on Netspace right now. Other than sometimes lengthy periods of downtime, they are not too bad.
AOL are starting their trials this year:
http://whirlpool.net.au/article.cfm/918?show=replies
It will be interesting to see what their free content is like. We've only just got a free Tucows mirror recently, and not much else of offer.
Cheers
Gary
reseller 07-29-2002, 08:04 AM I always think of Netscape when I see Netspace.
What I'd like is for our drakonian government to wake up and realise increased competition in the ISP/broadband/control of pipes is needed, if we as a anation are going to keep up
edude 07-29-2002, 09:21 AM lol netspace is alright, i believe they were the first to bring in the off peak and on peak download limits.
