hello,

When you all buy a domain name - Made-up Example: dogdays.com

Do you also buy dog.net, dog.us, dog.info, dog-days.com, dog-days.net etc to park? To protect others for using your idea.

Just wondering how you all handle that.

Kimberly

I think its best to buy up as many versions as you can afford. But only market one brand, and like you said park the rest at your main site. If you run a webhost, or use private name servers, you could use one(I usually use a .net) for the name servers, and still park it on the main site. Many uses for variants of a name.

I've had people take the singular or plural so I would take those too. ie: dogday.com and dogdays.com

If you have an ambitious project in the works, then yes, register all related domain names. I wish I had done this back in 1999.

Thanks for all the input. I have a few plurals and close names but I think I going to get several more close names to mine.

If you have the money, you can buy up all the tld. No one can blackmail and extort you for money holding any of your domain name.

Another good thing about having all the domains is that if someone types in the wrong address, and a better site comes up, the visitor might not even bother to visit your site.

I would rethink the name if it has so many plurals and close names. Also unless you plan on allot of type in traffic do not worry about purchasing all the variables, I would just buy the .net and .org version.

IMHO havening a bunch of domains pointing to the same site does not help your search rank. It is just like havening duplicate content.

I think you're safe if you buy both the .com and .net extensions. You may also be interested on purchasing the plural words of your domain.

Thats Better to get other extensions too but if you are going to keep your brand and have your domain name be kept in your visitors mind, dont park those domain names on top of the main one.

Just create a page and insert your main website domain name. (Like what Yahoo has done)

But isn't that consider doorway pages. I thought search engines did not like pages like that. Domains only made to lead you to another domain.

Hi,

It helps in search engine when all the gTLDs are registered with the same domain name and same owner, when you register all the gTLDs for single domain and try to search for that name in google then the google will list all the services and related pages for that domain name. you can check it with an example "blogger". search it in google you will get the idea.
Apart from this it is also prefered by corporates to provide strength to their online indentity on net.
