![]() | View Full Version : What is a "vector" for photoshop? TizzyTazzy 08-12-2007, 04:10 PM Thanks in advance! verto 08-12-2007, 06:43 PM That's almost too general of a question, because it really depends on the context, so there're lots of possible answers - what're you asking about specifically? One possible example is PS's relatively new support for the Pen tool. Try Googling up the keywords 'Photoshop' together with 'vector,' and you'll find a ton of tutorials on that. Brushes are also vector up to a limit.. Cheers.. Photoshop isn't the greatest when it comes to vectors. It is primarily a bitmap application (bitmaps are images that inherently lose quality when you scale them, either up or down). Illustrator is primarily a vector program. Drawing tools such as rectangle, polygon, pencil and various paintbrushes are vector tools. When you resize an object drawn as a vector, it will look like a nice, sharp crisp object at any size. If it is a bitmap, it will look best at its original size only. It will probably look ok if reduced in size, but it won't be as nice as the original (your software has to eliminate pixels - it had better be good at this!). If increased in size, it will degrade in quality fairly quickly. My favorite application for both vector and bitmap editing will forever be Fireworks (for WEB GRAPHICS only! Lack of CMYK support makes Fireworks unsuitable for print work). This shouldn't become a discussion about Fireworks v. Photoshop (there are plenty of those around already), but that's just one perspective and observation. verto 08-13-2007, 10:45 AM Shapes and text in a photoshop file would be vector.. Shapes are relative newbs. ;) converge 08-13-2007, 11:18 AM sorry.. you're right.. paths are vector too.. absolutely right.. :) Cheers.. Jack |
