View Full Version : HostPacket.net brownie points
Crypto 07-25-2002, 12:34 AM Got to give credit where it is due.
From an initial query to their sales guys through to a new hosting account with new domain name all up and running about 2 hours. Including me fluffing around.
Pretty damned good.
In the middle of the night US time too.
ckpeter 07-25-2002, 12:44 AM Good to know.
I would be most interested in knowing how you feel about them in two to three months, and see if they are still able to keep up with the quality.
Please update us in a few months.

rtsit 07-25-2002, 02:17 AM What type of domain extension was it? Usually .COM isn't instant like that.

Well It's not a few months yet. But I figured that having completed building it I could comment on that stage.
One big outage - but that has received ample coverage on this site. A couple of hiccups - but I am not sure where that happened.
The process of getting the site built was easy - the hostpacket servers have enough access that you don't have to wait to get them to do everything. Quick turn around for support questions, their server reasonable quick - I expect the largest component of any delays is getting packets from my modem - across the pacific - across the US than I am at their end.
Fingers crossed - lets see how we go once I herd some traffic in that general direction.
but so far I am reasonably happy. I'd be ecsatic with more traffic - but I suppose I can't blame them for that.
:D
baldscarface 08-16-2002, 08:45 PM my friend uses them, he likes them thus far too
Hello,
As long as I know... it usually takes upto 24-48 hours for the domain name to be propagated. Doesn't matter which ext.
How were you able to use your account ? Via Ip address ? http:xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/yoursite name, or dedicated ip ?
Cause I guess it's impossible to have your domain get running within 2 hours.
Anyone agrees ?
ckpeter 08-16-2002, 10:12 PM I have heard that some extension (.biz? .us?) propagate in a few minutes.
Even with regular extensions, if you were previously using a third-party name server, you can change the A record and have the site redirected in a few minutes.

I've heard that as well, though I've never experienced it myself. But even with the "normal" TLDs, it's not impossible to just get lucky time-wise.

Hello,
I guess he meant a new registered domain name. Also a new registered domain goes live within 2 hours ? Impossible !!
ckpeter 08-16-2002, 10:44 PM I am not so sure about what you said.
I have heard that the newer domain extensions can go live pretty quickly, maybe in a few minutes. (.biz? .us?)
Peter
Andrew 08-16-2002, 10:48 PM I can vouch for it being true for .us names that were just registered. It's happened twice now for two different clients of ours. Each time, the name resolved within 2 hours.
Hello,
Seems interesting... Everyday we learn from each another, Good at least there are some people here who can help you and let you feel your gaining knowledge.
Thanks all.
PS: But is it true with .com .net. .org ?
ckpeter 08-16-2002, 11:05 PM It is not true with com/net/org; just the newer extensions.
Although as I mentioned, if you were using a third-party DNS server, you can switch hosts in minutes with any extension.
Peter
Andrew 08-16-2002, 11:12 PM Yeah, only for the newer ones. .com, .org, and .net still take forever and a day. :)
smidwap 08-16-2002, 11:21 PM Don't those new extensions propagating also rely on your local ISP? I know many ISP's update their DNS around midnight. Maybe if you register or transfer a new domain name right before then you might be lucky and have it propagate within 2 hours.
