View Full Version : Cyberwings Servers at Rackshack

headsurfer

In an effort to help those displaced by Cyberwings, Rackshack has TEMPORARILY turned back on the former servers that served Cyberwings in an effort to allow those that had data on these servers that was not backed up to retrieve their data so that they do have a copy.

Originally, we set a deadline of 6pm when the servers would be shut back down. We have extended this deadline to 8AM Thursday morning when the servers will be powered down, restored, and made available for sale.

To all of the dozens of folks who emailed Rackshack and myself personally on this matter, I regret that we were not able to do this sooner.

If you have data on one of the affected servers, make a copy of your data now. By 8AM tomorrow morning, it will be too late.

Robert

Sticky position will be removed on Thursday after the servers are taken back down.

While I'm not involved in this Cyberwings story, I believe that this is a very respectable action from RS/HS. Once more, it shows that RS isn't there for the money alone, but it is run by humans. After all, they are keeping those servers alive at their own cost and have no obligations at all towards indirect customers (tier 2/3/4...).

Just my two cents.
I don't work for RackShack, I'm only a customer. And I'm happy there.

When things are good, it also needs to be said.

This is great news for people who were on RS server and I am happy for those people.

Unfortunately, hearing this also make me sad because I was on Plesk8 server and I believe that it was own by LightShip.

If only LightShip would also be willing to do the same thing as RackShack.

I just need a window of opportunity to download my data. I really don't care about the refund from CW but I am desperate for data back up. I can make up money in the future, but I cannot get back the data once it is lost. Those data are from my phpBB2 forum posts that my users have taken the time to post them. Some of the posts are important.

Three cheers for Headsurfer and Rackshack!!! That is really very decent of you guys to do this. It was also good of you to extend the time because many people are at work and can't do a darn thing until they get home.

I didn't lose any data... (I did but was able to recreate)... but for those that didn't have backups, I thank you for all of us!! Your heart is in the right place :)

The descent thing was done in my opinion, and it takes a real company to do that, Good luck for the future ex Cyberwings customers.

Good Job HS!!! To be honest, I would have never expected RS to do this. After all, they shut down the servers (for whatever reasons), which means that they are not getting paid...so all the bandwidth that all those downloads will take up is just going to be absorbed by RS....how many other datacenters would do this?? Congrats again HS on showing the industry how to put the customer first (even if it isn't your direct customer).

Thank you so much. If I had the money to host at your company, I'd be lining up to hand over cash, but alas, I do not. But this action won't be forgotten. Maybe in the future when funds aren't so low... thanks again.

Now... will Lightserve follow suit?

If RackShack intends to wipe out all data by tomorrow morning at 8 p.m. that just means that our data at LightShip are likely gone also.

In other words, all is lost by tomorrow.

I wish that I was hosted on the RackShack server rather than on Plesk8.

don't feed the frenzy peter when it has not been corroborated. I am not saying you aren't right but it has not been publicly stated so it really isn't fair to allege as fact. Although, one does not have to think very hard about which reason is most likely, namely yours.

ckpeter
07-25-2002, 01:15 AM
Well, I thought I read it somewhere. There were so many threads on that, I might have gotten confused as well.

Although, as you said, non-payment is the only logical explanation. Rackshack (or anyone for that matter) wouldn't cut off a server unless they didn't receive payment.

I highly doubt the RS will ever tell the public why those servers were shut off...as doing so would be a violation of the trust between dedicated host and customer.....but then again...there are some strange things in this situation...so maybe RS would be justified in doing so.....I have been in the RS IRC chat room most of the day...and I have noticed that thier answer to those questions is for you to contact CW staff.....as much as I understand your wanting to know...I do understand RS's stand on it... CW was RS's customer..not you.......and therefore RS can't really discuss account details with someone who is not thier customer....now, if CW had defrauded RS in anyway..then RS would be clear to delvulge that information for the good of the hosting community....but I am not a lawyer..and I could be wrong...one can bet though, that RS and HS will do all they can for this situation...and I think turning on those servers today was a very good indication that I am correct....

anyway..that is just my .02 cents...I could be wrong..

I must say, it is a kind move for Rackshack to do this favor for the customers of Cyber Wings. Cyber Wing's customers really weren't Rackshack's problem. Rackshack knew that it would be a tough break for all of Cyber Wing's customers if they lost all of their data because Cyber Wings messed up, thus they took action to prevent further chaos.

I applaud you guys for doing this favor to the rest of us former Cyber Wing (http://www.cyberwings.com) customers. In case any of you might be wondering "that guy was a Cyber Wing member, where did he go after he fell off the net?" I took my stuff (http://www.gotthegeek.com) and moved it all over to Insider Hosting (http://www.insiderhosting.com) which has been very good so far.

Thanks headsurfer and staff of Rackshack!

Thanks, but it may not help due to time differece.

I work 9 AM to 9 PM

By the time I get home from work
it will be 10 Pm, which I think is 8 AM in NY the same day/
Making it what time in Texas or wherever
Rack Shack is?

If I am lucky, I will be able to get stuff.

And a few people have offered to help me reinstall
my forum--now on a cobalt. The other thing I will need to do is reinstall my Gossermer Threads Links--now on a Plesk. The scripts have always been the hardest thing about web hosting and I never understood it well, so I appreciate the help. I moved to racknine by the way.

The friend who offered to helped mentioned something about a control panel and dumping the sql database, also php
admin, which seems top be a program and also seems to need to be installed. SO I am a bit lost until he gets back to me
on that one.

Robert Marsh: first a BIG thank you to you from MANY, many CW customers.....including ones not on CW servers there. I have heard many, many complaints over the past few days, and this is like a major sigh of relief....exactly what the customers needed. As someone watching all this, and all the "fiasco" customers are going through, this gesture on your part was a bit of blue sky....it is very much appreciated.

Matt(Racknine): Paul had been in contact with me asking some questions and I wish I could have helped him more directly, but when he wrote back and said you were taking care of it for him(migrating his sites), I was also in awe.

I have not dealt with either you or RS, but these types of personal service are what it's all about. Going out to special measures in certain cases is just wonderful. I've had a couple of hosts(including current) that have put some personal attention like this into matters for me too, and it is ALWAYS appreciated. It's things like this that make you want to stick with a host, and I feel that way about RotoHost and Netacore in many ways. You guys get thumbs up from me on your mannerisms. It is what others should learn from! And I just wanted to thank you both....RM for helping CW customers, and Matt for helping Paul in particular!

Paul: I know you're who I think you are! :) As I mentioned, just holler if I can be of any help with anything in the future. I hope all this migration goes over well for you and you have a nice new home with your new host.

This is what's amazing me at this point, is that people are helping each other in this matter....and I'm glad to see that wherever it happens. For ALL the positive measures being taken(in a case that has been clouded over with negativity), this is great. Thank you from me, and I'm sure from many others!!!

Take care...
Michael

Mr.Marsh and Rackshack..............

You have my utmost respect and the heartfelt thanks of many of my friends...........I was also a CW customer and although this gesture was not of direct benefit to me as I had all my info ,I have many friends who were hosted on your servers and were in a difficult situation. I am sure this will be remembered for a long time to come..........We all realize that this was an outstanding effort on the part of your company to go above and beyond what was required...

A very sincere thank you from so many

May We ask why they shut off to start with?

If RS answered this question I would think a lot less of them. What goes on between them and CW is not our business. CW is Rackshacks customer and no matter how bad your customer is you should always strive to protect his/her privacy.

BS! It is our business indeed when it affects us. I don't give a rat's ass about any confidentiality agreements when I am left in the dark for 4 weeks. One should always strive to do right and be honest.

One should always strive to do right and be honest

And that's exactly what RS is doing by keeping the servers up at their own expense. :). And as far as Rackshack telling us what's up with CW ,sorry, people affected are not RS customer they are CW customers and it would be unprofessional for RS to divulge anything that goes on between them and CW to the public.

I agree 100% ...... It is CW's responsiblity to keep thier customers informed. Unfortunatly, if the threads in this forum are any indication, this is not being done.
I do understand CW's customers desire for information on this matter, but unfortunatly, I don't believe that RS has any obligation to provide that information...they didn't even have any obligation to turn the servers on for you to get your data...so they have allready gone above and beyond....

utadmin/TimPD,

Excuse me guys, but this thread has NOTHING to do with your cashflow issues. Headsurfer brought CYBERWINGS' servers back online to help existing and former CYBERWINGS clients. Unless you are a client, are helping a client, or are commenting on THIS ISSUE I seriously suggest complaining elsewhere. Nothing you're stating here is new or on-topic.

it seems that Tim is obsessed with non-payment issues. THIS IS PECULIAR

Anyway, sarcasm aside, we all know how it sometimes seems that RackShack is run by a bunch of drones. Not always, sometimes.

Like I already mentioned in another thread, this really gives me an extremely positive image of this company. Well done, Robert. You're the man.

Now that I have moved* to Racknine, I just remembered something and wonder if anyone has any idea about it. Way back when, Cyberwings ran a design contest, and there was a winner I think. But what ever happened to the design? I don't recall anything ever changing.

*Re the move, it was not without some problems.

I made a backup when I heard that the servers would go down, which turned out to be later the same day.

Also Racknine (my new host), made a backup in the 11th hour
when Matt heard that I would not get home in time to get my files off of Rackshack--THANKS RAcknine!!!

But both backups were mysteriously lacking data in at least one directory, where there were files that had names that go pretty much from A to Z.

What was wierd is that files going up to about "mxxxx.html"
were there, but things from "n.....html" were not.

One backup was made BEFORE the site went down and the
other when Rackshack graciously let Racknine get the data.

Fortunately, I just found an older backup of those same files when I hosted on GreenNet (an NGO/NPO in the UK that hosts only sites on social change) that will serve me well in the reconstruction.

But it is wierd and I can't for the life of me figure out where those files were. I know that ftp up and downloads sometimes fail
midway, especially when attempting to move multiple files and folders, but this seems to suggest the data just wasn't there to start with. Well, it doesn't matter. Just curious.

Maybe my site wasn't complete all along...although I THOUGHT it was.

Webmaster? Maybe I should deal with spider webs!

Paul

I actually do remember someone winning the ticket - I don't remember the name, but it was anounced in the chat room late one night. Maybe it was one of the volunteers? Possibly Daniel? Can't say for sure though.
